Time of Day Restrictions
« on: April 13, 2018, 07:02:21 am »
Hey folks,

Considering trying out opnsense and was wondering if it offered time of use restrictions?  By that, I don't just mean a one-size-fits-all setting, but, where I can select individual MAC addresses (the kids' tablets) and only allow them access at certain times of the day.

Possible?

You can create schedules under Firewall -> Settings -> Schedules and set your needed time.
Then create a Firewall Rule and select the created Schedules.

Best is maybe to set the time the internet should be blocked and create a deny rule on top.
You can register the MAC in the DHCP Server and assing a static IP. So you can create the rule only for the single device via the IP-Adress.

Thanks for the tip.  However, I was not able to get the software to work at all, incl the dhcp server.. went back to smoothwall.

it is working like a charm but try to set up: "every day, between 20:00 and 08:00 next day" - that is kind of impossible:
1- every day has to be marked separately
2- hours have to be split into:
20:00-23:59
00:00-08:00

very very inconvenient
but it works

...have an eye on the existing states after your rule ("block" rule, I suggest) kicks in. Othwise the rule might not work as expected and will not end all (established...) "interwebs activities" after 20:00....

You could also try to schedule "allow" rules between 08:00 and 20:00.
