Multiple IPv4 subnets on one interface
« on: December 13, 2017, 10:02:14 am »
Hi,

I wonder if there's a way to hook up several IPv4 subnets to multiple interfaces simultaneously? Our topology is as follows: two incoming interfaces from our upstreams (dynamically routed via BGP) and two outgoing to two server racks. We tried virtual IPs but the GUI only allows us to add a single /24 subnet to each interface then it says "This IP address is being used by another interface or VIP". Any ideas on how this can be fixed?

Hi there,

You probably want to bridge them which is possible by creating a bridge holding both interfaces, but that is not a recommended setup. Best to get a hardware switch to do this for you if you want a thoroughly reliable implementation.

Cheers,

Yes, we have hardware switches in both racks behind the OPNsense router.

Yes, we have a bridge set up. Does it mean we need to specify the subnets via virtual IP only on one interface which is a part of the bridge?

Does you switches support MLAG or are stacked? Then you could create a LAGG via LACP.

I will try to find out but I doubt they do. These switches were shipped to us by our customer so we're not in a position to swap anything unfortunately. I guess one of the switches is even unmanaged or has some kind of issue with remote access.
