Problems w/initial setup
« on: March 03, 2018, 06:39:19 pm »
New to OPNSense, starting off with a very old (too old? AMD Athlon 64 X2), along with an quad intel gigabit NIC (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000006624/network-and-i-o/ethernet-products.html).

I've followed the instructions to automatically config OPNSense.
auto sense, plug wan port in
  autosense, plug lan port in.

In this case the lan port plugs in to an empty managed switch.  Before the setup is finished the screen goes into a loop, the keyboard becomes unresponsive and the console stops.

At subsequent bootups opnsense declares it is using 192.168.1.1, however I cannot ping it if I plug a terminal into the previously mentioned empty managed switch, self configuring the terminal with a static IP of 192.168.1.2.

How is this going so wrong, so early into the configuration process?

Thanks!

Should be mentioned that the wan port plugs directly into the DSL modem using PPPoE.

While this DSL modem can act as a dhcp server, it is configured not to, it is in bridge mode.
