Hi people,

I'm changing my ISP at the moment and now I'm again able to use my own router (yes I was forced to use the ISPs router).
About a month and a half ago I tried to use an old PC with OPNsense as a router between the ISPs router and my LAN because it was a cool project I had in mind. I really liked OPNsense at the point that I want to use it with my new ISP and directly attache it to the ADSL line. The PC died last week for unknown reasons, I'll take a look at it today or tomorrow and try to find out what happened (and potentially repair it). I'll post what expansion types it haves ASAP.
So... Anyone knows a good but cheap (<50$ should be OK) ADSL card for OPNsense? Or does anyone know a better solution?

Thanks,
Mattia_98

EDIT:
The Computer works again, the hard disk died. I'm still with my old ISP, it seems to take a wile... :(
A picture of the expansion slots is in the attachment. (Sorry if I couldn't figure out what types they are, let me know if you know  ;) )

I use the TP-Link TD-8817 in bridging mode and set OPNsense to do the PPPoE login through an Ethernet NIC.

Hi Bart,
I took a look at the product you mentioned. It seems very good on tp-links site, but the 3 Amazon reviews that I could find where very different from each other: one saying its crap, the other one saying it's good and the 3rd saying that he got a different version of the model than the one of tp-links website.. I also have to buy it from eBay because it isn't in stock on Amazon anymore so I don't know which version I get (the 3rd reviewer says that one of the missing features is IPv6 support).
What is your experience with this product? (disconnects, slow-downs, unstable connection, ecc.)
While searching I found some other modems: Netgear DM111P-100ISS, TP-Link TD-8616. I couldn't find any hint on these two about IPv6 support.

Thanks,

Mattia, why not using a external DSL modem in bridge mode and OPNSENSE doing the PPPoE

Hi jstrebel,
I thought about it and also did some research. Bart's modem seems pretty good but I already wrote the problems with that modem. Do you have any suggestions for a good and reliable modem?

Thanks,
Mattia

Hi Mattia,

The model I bought from Amazon UK is Version 8.2 of the TD-8817 which proudly sports an IPv6 sticker on the box. I'm switching to a native IPv6 ISP in little over a week, and I'll then be able to test more thoroughly. I am currently using SixXs tunnels, which are of course absolutely fine.

I'm thinking that when the modem is in bridge mode, it won't make any difference anyway. Remember that PPPoE encapsulates Ethernet (layer 2) frames through an IPv4 connection to the ISP. The IPv6 compatibility is therefore between the network card of your OPNsense and the ISP access layer switch.

As far as reliability goes, I originally looked at the Draytek Vigor 120 ADSL modem but was dissuaded by the many reviews about poor lifespan. I have had TP-Link kit before and it has lasted marginally better than average for consumer devices. At 20% of the price of the Vigor, the choice was easy.

Mattia, i used pirelli, motorola, zyxel with good results

Hi Bart,

does that mean that it doesn't matter what modem I have, it only depends on the OS which does the PPPoE if I will be able to have IPv6 support?
Anyway. Looking on the descriptions on eBay doesn't help: none of them speak about IPv6 support which suggests that they are the old version.. (Here's the link where I looked for the TD-8817 http://www.ebay.it/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XTD-8817.TRS0&_nkw=TD-8817&_sacat=0 , I'm from Italy).

If the answer to the question is yes it wouldn't matter anyway; but if the OPNsense box dies again, it would be nice to have working IPv6.

Thanks,
Mattia

Hi,

while searching for modems and visiting the manufacturers sites I found the ZyXEL AMG 1001. Seems pretty good and has IPv6 support. What do you guys think?

Thanks,
Mattia

Hi Mattia,

Once I change providers, I will be able to test my hypothesis on PPPoE. The modem has selections for IPv4 and IPv6 and I shall check their effect in bridge mode.

I have no experience with Zyxel devices, just the TP-Link and a Buffalo WBMR-HP-G300H. The latter worked great with DD-WRT firmware in bridging mode. In fact, I got the TP-Link modem so I could get the Buffalo back as a WiFi AP.

Bart...

Hi Mattia, the white slots are PCI and the brown one is a PCI express x16 slot.

Bart...

That brown slot is not PCI-E, it's AGP.
Something very different. And looking at the brown/yellow-ish PCB it looks like quite an old motherboard of at least 10 years ago?
Hobbyist at home, sysadmin at work. Sometimes the first is mixed with the second.

Is there a model number silkscreened on the circuit board?

Sorry for not responding. I was very busy..
I post the infos ASAP

Nope, cant find any
