Ironically, the beeps indicate the system is up and running.
The console not showing a login prompt hints to a twist in the tty settings that don't quite work.
What image type is this? Have you tried the images for 17.1.4? Is this a directly connected VGA monitor?
Cheers,
Franco

yes this is directly connected to a monitor
i have used the iso for the following with the same results
vga
serial
cdrom
all have the same effect, i did manage to get logged in from a laptop i connected to the switch and it is running in live which made me look more
and i see a error when the comnands are scrolling
says consol com console errors or something like that it was scrolling way to fast to see,
i also looked in the install direction on here and i am never promted to have any install on any hard drive which would indicate i am runninng live

so here is an update
went ahead and installed 16.7 and went off with out a hitch,
the lgin screen was there and all was well then i updated some packages and low and behold while on 16.7 it is having the same effect as 17.1.4 is i no longer have a login at the console of the machine, it was working just fine
but now the console reads
16.7.14_2
so i am lost

Hi Adrian,
The VGA image is the one you are looking for, CD-ROM should work too in general. The comconsole error is normal, you don't have a serial port.
The test with 16.7 is interesting, however, as it shows the issue surfaced somewhere in 16.7.x, not 17.1 at all.
GUI should still work, we could try to play with /etc/ttys over SSH after upgrading to 17.1.4?
Cheers,
Franco

i can try that but when i try to upgrade it says perform it from console by using option #12 but i cant get tot he console because there is no login from the console..
i can get in through the web GUI but when i try to updates says no updates but clearly shows 17.1.4 there as being a update available but not letting me get it

SSH root shell console option 12 still works fine, even remotely.

potential pfsense convert here. I was unable to install to hdd via the latest release. I'm downloading 16.7 and then attempting to upgrade once it's on the hard disk.
edit:
Installing in vmware esxi. The current image loads me into live mode without giving the option to install to disk. Reading above, i'm going to attempt the same thing with the 16.7 iso, and then upgrade once it's installed.
