Newbie Questions
« on: May 27, 2019, 08:32:17 pm »
Hello all,

Very excited to be a part of this forum, as I have deployed my first OPNsense firewall today on diy hardware. My questions relate to the following:

1) Can I edit Etc/Conf from the gui?
2) Is Clamav the only av that can run on the firewall? Ideally would love to deploy end point protection for systems on my net, via the firewall.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,

Ad 1 - configuration changes in the GUI affect parts of /etc. What do you want to change?
Ad 2 - have a look at the os-c-icap plugin. It allows virus scanning via external devices.

Bart,

When I installed a couple of plugins they said to edit /etc/conf, so these startup automatically. Is this done at plugin install time or do I need to edit etc/conf to add them? If I have to add them is there a way from the gui to do this or do I need to login via cmd line and get this done?

Thanks,
Steve

The provided plugins in system:firmware:plugins are managed in gui. There are checkboxes to enable them. No need for cli.
Opnsense is mainly the web framework for configuration and managment. Else you could just use freebsd and pf if you prefer cli configuration and manual installs.

I hate CLI, but it is a necessary evil and one needed when I was a full time network engineer. GUI is preferable in my older age, so its good to know that those msgs can be ignored if I am using plugins from the plugin section.

Also, anything that requires to be (re)started appears under 'services' on your dashboard.
