Which install
« on: May 11, 2019, 03:50:58 pm »
I have an xtm 505 box with a cf running latest version of opnsense all good. I'd like to move to a HDD but as some of you will know this box does not boot off of USB and unless the BIOS is flashed, there are no BIOS changes permitted. I need to initially start the install to a drive in another machine then move the drive back into the xtm unit. So. which install do I need? Initially I'll have VGA, no serial (laptop) but as soon as Im back to the xtm, only serial.

you can switch between serial and VGA in the web interface (requires a reboot). You only need the right image for the installation. (from your description VGA).

I managed to install to HD but the drive failed soon after. Need to go through same process again but can't remember which install is required. To re-iterate; I will start from a laptop with DVD input VGA output but no serial then move the prepared HD to my box which only has serial I/O. I tried the DVD install, great on laptop but no good once transferred. I attempted both VGA and serial but the USB img fails to boot, these were written with Win32Disk Imager

Hmm, well I got the serial install img to write to usb and it boots fine except after the welcome message, there is no login prompt?
