OpnSense and WiFi Mesh
« on: April 30, 2019, 12:46:40 pm »
Hello all,

New to the forums and a new OpnSense user.  Just beginning to get the details down of OpnSense setup and use, but one thing I wanted to ask before I go any further is if the TP-Link Deco Mesh Hardware / Setup is compatible with OpnSense

https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Deco-Whole-Home-System/dp/B07PS6X293?th=1

Still learning / reading up on the OpnSense Firewall / Router, but I have this system at home currently running on my ISP's Router and want to keep the system in place in my home, but also want to use a better, more configurable routing / firewall solution like OpnSense.

Thanks for the assistance!

Should work: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/1842/

NB I have no personal experience from this product

Did you ever get the TP-Link Deco to work with OPNsense? Every time I put it behind the OPNsense, it claims it can't connect to the internet. Yet PCs have no issue. Just curious if you ever got it to work.

Hi grafikal,

Not specific to the TP-Link Deco but I got caught out with this when adding an Orbi-Pro Mesh to my old router/FW.

The issue turned out to be that I needed to set the Orbi in bridge mode - otherwise it was fighting with the router.

Worth trying if you haven't already.

I have no issues running TP-Link Deco with Opnsense. Just make sure to put it into Access Point mode (bridge mode) by going to Advance -> Operation mode, and reboot all system.

I’m new to this process as well. I have the x55 Deco Mesh WiFi system, it is currently connected to my isp modem. I know I have to put it in AP Mode when trying to connect it to my opnsense router. My question is when?

Do I switch to AP Mode now and then move over the Ethernet cable to the opnsense router, or do I connect the opnsense router to my isp modem first and then bring over the Deco Mesh last and then switch it over to AP Mode?

I need help with the steps to make sure I still have wifi access. Any help or questions would be greatly appreciated.

So long as the Deco is set as a DHCP client upstream there should be no need to set it in bridge mode. If left in routing mode then downstream devices will not be visible to OPNsense which will see only the Deco. This is why you normally set it to bridge, for full visibility and management, and also avoiding double-translation of addresses. I have used both modes behind OPNsense.

If using bridge mode, I would set that after other reconfiguration, not before.
