[SOLVED] DNS question: What do I need that local hostnames are looked up first?

Hi, I have a very stupid question.
I have a number of local host Hostnames configured under "Services: DHCP: Server"
If I try to access or ping one of this hosts by name I do not get response of this local host. But I do get response by the Server of my provider where my domain is registered. In case I enter this host name under "Services: DNS Forwarder" then the local host responds to the local address doing a ping.
My question is how can I achieve this without entering the host name twice? I have played with the the settings "Services: DNS Forwarder" (Static DHCP and Prefer DHCP) -> no change in behavior
BTW: It was working by "default" as desired with my m0n0wall.
ping
www.myregisterddomain.ch
PING
www.myregisterddomain.ch
(217.26.xx.yy): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 217.26.xx.yy: icmp_seq=0 ttl=53 time=13.959 ms
ping kyocera1370
PING kyocera1370.myregisterddomain.ch (217.26.xx.yy): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 217.26.xx.yy: icmp_seq=0 ttl=53 time=17.241 ms
(xx.yy are not provided
The local address of the kyocera1370 is 192.168.x.x
Thanks Jakob

Hi Jakob,
I changed my hostname to some external domain from something more bogus and started to get the same error with my DNS host overrides. I fixed up the override (wrong domain) and it started working.
My static and dynamic entries work too, but I'm using the latest development version which has had DHCP and DNS updates in that area.
Do you use the DHCP domain name override setting or is your OPNsense domain name "myregisterddomain.ch"?
Cheers,
Franco

Franco,
thank you for responding on this. I am using 16.7.a_419-amd.
My OPNsense domain is my registereddomain.ch

So there is no DHCP server domain name override?
There's a newer development version available now, but it probably also won't help.
Would it be possible to get shell access to the box?

Hi Jakob,
This seemed to work on the box itself. I noticed the dhcpleases daemon wasn't running, so that led me to the "DHCP Registration" option in the forwarder that was turned off. I switched it on, and it should work now?
Cheers,
