Can I move from 17.7.12 to 18.7 and move onto new hardware by copying the config file? Both devices are appliance shop ones just eh new one has more ports and 10 G..
Or how would we move setup to new device?

I'm interested in the answer myself. I have a very good configuration running for my needs and want to move to a new box.
With the new box having a different ordering of nics will I lose all my rules and such when i change the wan, lan and opt1 or is will everything just follow over?
old box has a realtek on the board for wan and I use a dual intell for lan and opt1
new board has a nvidia I'll use for the wan and a dual intell for lan and opt1
I have updated , reset to factory and done fresh installs while testing and the configs do work on other versions but this is the first time to change boxes with a different nic and am wondering whats going to be involved.

Most of my experience is with PFsense so I have not tired on OPNsense yet.
I have setup a new router to replace an older router by just setting up the interface names correctly and then downloading the xml config for reference.
Download xml config from router with config you want to replace the <if> fields with the correct ones. If your using VLANs triple check!
Upload modified config to new router and it should work.

using the same system, updates, re installs, importing configs between versions all works smooth and slick.
So your saying to make the changes on the old original system and then use that backup config for the new system?
Seems counter intuitive to make the changes on the old original system and just as much work to make the changes on the new system. Not saving any time or effort.
same problems i imagine doing it either way.
I'll do a fresh install on my new system in a bit and import the original old system backup config during the install and and then make the changes so I don't have to take the network and internet down and get grief from the kids and wife lol.
Changing nics or changing to a new system is a pain.
