Connection drop on PPPoE

Hi

I have an OPNsense as my home router, it has two Realtek interfaces (one for WAN and one for LAN).

My ISP authenticates via PPPoE and I'm having random PPPoE drops, the connection simply stops working, no packets are received or sent, the interface still shows as connected, if i try to reload it or disconnect and reconnect it does not get an IP address, it will only start working again after a reboot. At the beginning this was happening about once a day, now it is more rare but still happens from time to time (i would guess about once every 2-3 weeks).

I've already tried to swap the interfaces to rule out any hardware issues on the NICs.

I need to remotely access services behind this router and not aways have someone in loco to manually reboot the router.

I've already tried to find in the logs for some indication of what might be going wrong, but couldn't find anything related and also couldn't find anything similar online.

Any suggestions on how to debug this problem?

I would suggest you start with using internal (PCI/PCIe) Intel-based cards. Realtek and external (USB and such) cards are notorious for these kinds of issues.

So, this would not be recommended as a small footprint firewall to install OPNsense.... https://www.newegg.com/asrock-4x4-box-4300u/p/56-158-071 as it has 2x LAN connections but are Realtek RTL8125BG / Realtek R8111FPV

I use an old HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF box for mine...then got a cheap $20 PCI-X (later a 32bit PCI) card from amazon

Upgraded the CPU to a i7-3770 and put 32 gigs of ram in it...still cheaper than that little box that may or may not work, uses more power I guess

might set the prevent interface removal in the interfaces tab so it doesn't turn off the nic when the PPPoE drops

Hey I am having the same issue as OP. Realtek NICs, PPPoE dropping with no usable log output, just "newwanip unable to get new ip" etc.

This is on a Wyse thin client that seems to be handling OPNsense very well, other than these connection drops.

I just enabled 'Prevent interface removal' on the WAN interface, but I won't know if that helps or not until the connection drops again, or doesnt, which seems to happen at completely random times. Sometimes I'll have hours of uptime, other times less than an hour.

UPDATE:
Setting prevent interface removal did not help. I am now trying with the realtek vendor drivers which i was hoping not to have to try, but I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of performance for stability. WIll update again if issue is resolved (or not) by the vendor drivers.
