Performance Question

What is the most important performance aspect of OPNsense? I have a J3160 quad core build with 8 gig of RAM. When I turn on IPS I saturate my device and my Internet service becomes unavailable. I have looked at some older desktops that have higher core counts and high clocks. For example there are some older Dell Xeon workstations on eBay that have Xeon quad core procs at 3.2 GHZ. Should I be considering these, since they have higher clocks than my little J3160?
