Thanks for your response. I still believe it's not only a bug which turns the forwarder off, as I tried what you suggested to no avail, still not resolving those entries.
I checked two workarounds: Putting the entries directly in /etc/hosts or using the DNS resolver with host overrides instead of the forwarder. Both appear to work.
I also believe the DHCP registration and host overrides should not be related, as in my view they are different features.
