I remember when I was studying for my Microsoft MCSE many years ago. At the time I was studying in particular DNS and after reading several chapters over and over I was sooooo confused. Then I read a one page Novell document and completely understood DNS. Novell rescued me on IPv4 also. Ignore all things Microsoft. Their days are numbered while they try and play the pretty girl's friend. "You will not be allowed to co-opt Linux and shall not pass!!"
Don't do things the hard way. Meaning, don't stray too far off the beaten path jacking around with making non standard things somehow work. There's wild beasts out in them woods and you'll beat yourself to death finding a way back out. I know from experience.
