I am testing OPNsense 25.1.6 on the R4S, and unfortunately, the performance I'm observing is quite poor (~230 Mbps download / ~210 Mbps upload).

Correct. I'm very fond of small, power-efficient AARCH64 devices, and their computing power keeps improving. I just wish these models had better support from FreeBSD and OPNsense. Currently, I'm using OpenWrt on a NanoPi R6S, and the performance is stellar (comparable to an Intel N100). I'd really like to take advantage of all the additional capabilities that OPNsense offers, but unfortunately, OPNsense performance on these devices with Realtek Ethernet, while functional, it is far from usable at the present moment.
