24.1 Legacy Series / Default route not added after PPPoE restart

I'm having an issue in that the default route is not added after a restart of the PPPoE connection (e.g., by changing WAN settings then clicking 'Apply'). This prevents client internet access entirely.
The default route does not show in Routes > Status. Fix is either to restart or to go to Gateways > Configuration and click 'Apply' (no settings change needed).
Is there any solution to this?
