23.1 Legacy Series / Re: Connection on WAN interface causing non responsive
« on: May 01, 2023, 07:52:06 pm »
Little further details
I did a clean upgrade to 23.1, the default configuration. Planning to load my previous configuration soon.
UE0 is the WAN plugged into a USB ethernet adapter, with RealTec chip inside.
RE0 is the LAN internall ethernet port
This hardware was used with 27.x release since June 2022.
The only hiccup is at startup. When the system boots the WAN frequently would show as down, I would log into the Web UI, go to interfaces -> overview expand the WAN interface, then hit reload. Sometimes it would require hitting reload a second or third time, then it would work. Once that startup process was done, the system would be stable for months at a time.
Since no hardware has changed in the past 10 months, I don't think hardware is the issue at this point.
Some further troubleshooting
I logged into the VGA console. Unplugged the LAN cable and swapped the WAN cable to RE0 (the internal eth port). I was able to update via the console, rebooted, then checked for updates again, all updates installed.
I then swapped the WAN cable back to the USB ethernet. Within seconds it went into a loop of messages and showing UE0 up, UE0 down. It would repeat every ten seconds or so. After maybe 45 seconds of that, it started flashing text on the console too fast to read or get a picture of. After about 30 seconds, it would reboot.
I watched it for a while, it kept repeating the pattern of messages then rebooting.
I unplugged the WAN cable and it stopped on the UE0 down message. I plugged the LAN cable into the internel eth port, and logged into the Web UI.
I then decided to plug the LAN cable into the USB ethernet, leaving the internal eth port open. The system seems stable that way running for 20 minutes without issue.

So to recap
WAN in USB, LAN in internal -> interfaces keep rotating up/down, reboots repeatedly
WAN in USB, nothing in internal -> interfaces keep rotating up/down, reboots repeatedly
LAN in USB, nothing in internal -> stable
LAN in USB, WAN in internal -> interfaces keep rotating up/down, reboots repeatedly
How can I capture some useful logs to further troubleshoot?
