Dear Franco,

Affirmative on OpnSense 20.7 for AMD Ryzen 3 3100.

Thank you.

#2
Dear Franco, Acknowledged.

It is my intention to install one of the FreeBSD desktop operating systems and see what falls out from that exercise. My hope is the hardware is detected and assigned a driver. I will post result once I find the time to do this. Do you recommend a flavour of FreeBSD operating system that I might try that lines up closely tot he base operating system OpnSense is built upon?

In relation to the absence of CPU thermal data, what is your thought on that issue?

Regards Peter.

I also ran "pciconf -l -bcev" from putty shell and found this so has OpnSense has detected the hardware?:

20.1 Legacy Series / Ryzen 3 3100 no thermal data
May 24, 2020, 08:53:38 AM
Dear All, I am testing an AMD Ryzen 3 3100 on MSI B450I mini-itx motherboard. The installation process using the serial installer was without problem and very fast.

I was interested in observing two things; (1) does OpnSense 20.1 detect the onboard Intel 3168 WiFi chip as it is listed as supported in FreeBSD (https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=iwm&sektion=4) and (2) what does OpnSense report for the CPU thermals.

What I have observed is no wireless hardware has been detected and there is no thermal data reported when the None/ACPI or AMD K8/K10 modules selected.

I will be checking the hardware logs to see if the hardware is detected during boot in relation to Intel Wifi and is the thermal data issue related to a similiar forum post where it is suggested the AMD CPU is "too new" for the underlying FreeBSD operating system.

Can anyone provide insight into these issue please based on their knowledge and/or experience?

Regards PeterB.

The OpnSense temperature reports a numerical value of 82 and says degrees celcius but when I check the ASUS BIOS the temperature is reported as 28 degrees Celcius.

I don't know if this is correct but my mate reckons that 28 degrees Celcius is about 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

He is suggesting the OpnSense GUI is actually reporting degrees Fahrenheit and not degrees Celcius. Does this sound correct? Or is the ASUS motherboard reporting the numerical value 82 and it is assumed it is Celcius?

20.1 Legacy Series / Re: sensord
May 11, 2020, 01:56:04 AM
Dear marjohn56,

Thank you.

The reason I was looking for sensord information was to get fan speed readings. The reason I wanted to get fan speed readings and possibly adjust is the CPU temperature readings on my firewall are around 80-85 degrees celcius as reported by the OpnSense widget.

When I go into BIOS and check the reading it is usually around 30 degrees celcius and when I run stress testing from Windows it is usually in the mid 40 degrees celcius range.

My post here https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=17158.0 is asking how accurate is the temperature reading using AMD temperature output in OpnSense.

I sure did, and got this. That is a big list which I checked through and I cannot see anything useful. What do you think?

Dear Wired Life,

I have been looking also and stumbled across this, https://teklager.se/en/products/router-components/wle900vx-wireless-wifi-kit .

It has the card, the cables and the antennas.

I don't know if it works but after I finish learning about everything else it is my intention to order a kit to see how it works.

Regards

20.1 Legacy Series / sensord
May 10, 2020, 11:34:17 AM
Dear All,

I was reading from https://calomel.org/sensorsd_config.html and did see this reference to sensord.

The article states "The first thing you need to do is see if the chipset on the motherboard you are using is supported by OpenBSD. Execute "sysctl hw.sensors" and you should see something similar to this output".

Does Free BSD have this sensord feature (I think they are saying sensord is an OpenBSD feature) and by inference does OpnSense have this feature?

TYIA.

Postscript, I found this reference https://wiki.freebsd.org/GSoC2007/cnst-sensors . Does this mean that FreeBSD does have this? Does this mean that OpnSense has this?

Dear All,
I would like to say hello first and I am new to the OpnSense firewall. I am also a pfSense "migrant" finding the layout of the OpnSense firewall simply more intuitive despite the very close relationship between the two species of firewall.

To my issue: I have built a small firewall based around ASUS A320I-K ITX motherboard, AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF combination. It is running in a pink Silverstone SG13 case with 400W Silverstone ATX PSU and 16GB RAM plus 1TB Seagate 700RPM HDD with add-in 4 port RTL8111 NIC in the single PCIe slot, total of 5 network ports including onboard NIC.

I am monitoring the CPU temperature via OpnSense widget and observe CPU temperature range running around the high 70 degree range to mid 80 degree range and that seems high to me especially given the CPU usage reports typically around 0.10 whilst the OpnSense firewall is running.

I have listened to the CPU fan and it does not seem to run hard. I have booted into BIOS and when in BOS the CPU temperature reports around low 30 degree mark. I have booted into Windows and run CPU stress testing and never see the temperature get past mid 40 degree mark.

I have enabled PowerD in OpnSense web gui. I have set to use the AMD K8/K10 temperature monitor. I have tried HI Adaptive, Adaptive, Maximum, Minimum on all three of  AC power, Battery Power and Normal and none seem to have any specific impact on the reported CPU temperature.

I have used the various sysctl commands to check and confirm AMD power loaded and the CPU features detected for the specific AMD CPU installed. Thank you to all of the previous users who posted where I have learnt this from.

I have gone into the BIOS and switched from Auto calibrate for the fan control and changed to manual with accustom profile to speed up the fan. Whilst in the BIOS I have manually changed the minimum fan speed in the BIOS from 200RPM to 600 RPM. I have also observed the fan speed reporting around 1100RPM whilst CPU temperature is 32 degrees Celsius.

My questions; Is the CPU temperature being reported by OpnSense webgui accurate or not bearing in mind the reported temperature in Windows and BIOS observations?

Any suggestions based on insight and/or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Obiter: Where is the video card? It does not have one. I preinstall OpnSense with a video card in the single PCIe slot and when I have established management via the web gui I swap out the video card and install the 4 port RTL8111 NIC. It works a treat.
