So the issue is a modem setting.  For some reason when the modem is set to "Auto (4G LTE/5G)" vs "4G LTE" we get the very weird traffic issues documented.

There are no issues connecting and passing traffic via modem WiFi (in 5G mode).  However, the USB RNDIS doesn't work properly when the modem is in 5G mode.

Another odd thing:
While I can successfully ping pkg.opnsense.org from an ssh into OpnSense, when I run the "Connectivity Audit" the ping the audit runs to pkg.opnsense.org fails (even when the ping from the shell is running successfully).

Do not trust that check - it uses a ping with a packet size to create a 1500 byte MTU packet, which will fail on some platforms.

Funny you should ask about ICMP & UDP vs TCP.  I had to jump into a Google Meet meeting and was able to successfully connect to and participate in the meeting across this OpnSense install & 5G modem setup.  I wouldn't have thought to test this way.  I also thought there would be some TCP used for the Google Meet.  Not only did the meeting work fine, even the automated close-captioning worked.

I already tested the modem tethering with two other devices, prior to reaching out.

I've compared the firmware and firewall settings with working units, replicated those, and even tried loading a config file from another unit - which failed as they are all different hardware.  That is why I've reached out here.

I even tried wiping and reinstalling twice before asking for help.

What could possibly allow DNS resolution and successful ICMP traffic, but then prevent OpnSense from being able to connect to update servers and even prevent a curl request from downloading a file?

Sorry.  I have the same modem in connected to three other OpnSense installs where it is working without an issue.  Since I can get IP traffic (ICMP pings) across the modem, it didn't seem to be the point of failure.  The modem IP assigned to OpnSense is as the DMZ address in the modem.

The modem is a MiFi2000 (some specs: https://www.4gltemall.com/inseego-5g-mifi-m2000.html).  It is connected to a USB port and presents to the system as ue0, which is assigned to the WAN. 

Presently the WAN interface configuration is enabled and receives an IPv4 via DHCP (from the modem).  IPv6 is set to "none".  "Block private networks" and "Block bogon networks" are unchecked. "Overide MTU" is checked.

Trying to reduce possible interference while troubleshooting.

Again, apologies for not being more explicit about the 5G modem.

IPv6 is completely disabled (https://www.thomas-krenn.com/en/wiki/OPNsense_disable_IPv6).

Both interfaces are set to "none" for IPv6 and "prefer IPv4 over IPv6" is checked under general settings.  The IPv6 rule under Firewall > Rules > LAN is also disabled.  There should be no utilization of IPv6 at all (though it seems to still try).

The modem (WAN) and connected LAN client also have IPv6 disabled.

Even more fascinating:

When I run the connectivity audit it returns (shortened):
No IPv4 for pkg.opnsense.org
No IPv6 for pkg.opnsense.org

BUT - If I ping pkg.opnsense.org from the a shell and then run the audit (while ping is running from a shell) the audit pings and finds the IPv4 address (89.149.222.99).  However, it then gives 100% packet loss for the audit ping instance.  Meanwhile, the shell ping of pkg.opnsense.org has no packet loss across ~300 packets.

This is really quite confusing.

It passes the "Health" audit.  It cannot fetch the needed file for the "Security" audit (Unknown resolver error).  The "Connectivity" audit returns a more explicit error matching what I've been experienceing:
The "Checking server certificate for host: pkg.opnsense.org" returns an error: "Address family for hostname not supported."

At the same time, sshing into Opnsense I can ping pkg.opnsense.org and it returns 89.149.222.99 (and works for other URLs too).


Under System > Settings > General I have DNS servers (both Cloudflare and Google) along with the "Prefer to use IPv4 even if IPv6 is available" checked.

I'm seeing the oddest behavior.

New 25.1 install.  Interfaces available and correct; e.g. igb0 (LAN) and ue0 (WAN).  I can successfully ping IPs (1.1.1.1., 8.8.8.8) and domain names (google.com, yahoo.com, pkg.opnsense.org, etc.).

However, I cannot update from GUI or cli.  I cannot even download using curl.

Direct connections to the WAN modem work properly.
Wiped and reinstalled just to verify that it wasn't a configuration change causing the issue.
NAT is set to automatic rule generation (default).
WAN is set to not/not block private networks (the modem provides/uses a private address space (192.168.2.1/24)).

Ok.  The package causing the problem was : os-mail-backup.

Apparently it is using phpmailer-5.2.28, which is too outdated to work.

Running 22.7.7_1.  Everything is up to date.

Tried to add a new WAN rule to block a single LAN IP.  Nothing fancy.  The rule is recorded.  When I try to apply the rule I get: Fatal error: __autoload() is no longer supported, use spl_autoload_register() instead in /usr/local/share/phpmailer/PHPMailerAutoload.php on line 45

I'm not even sure how phpmailer would interact with a WAN rule.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

There is also a binary if_urndis.ko module that seems to work fine with the kernel in the 20.1.7 release.

Ok.  I updated to 20.1.7 too, and it doesn't seem that the if_urndis.ko module included has the patch.  As soon as I loaded my custom if_urndis.ko I get ue0.


Here is the binary/compiled module.  Unload the module (if it is loaded) kldunload if_urndis.ko.

Just extract it in /boot/kernel/.  It will replace the existing if_urndis.ko (which you should rename; e.g. if_urndis.ko.orig).

Then kldload if_urndis.ko to load the module.

Then you will magically have ue0!
