I have a similar issue with the same hardware (Intel J1900 processor@2 GHz, 8 GB DDR3L RAM, 120 GB SSD).
I am using the 17.1 vga image on a 4gb USB drive. I found that the usb drive image created by rufus will not load the boot loader. However, creating the image on a usb drive using dd will allow the boot loader to run.
However, after boot loader runs and booting starts, it hangs almost immediately. On the display, 6 lines after "Booting..." there's a line that starts "masks" and the boot hangs at that point.
This appears to be an OPNSense issue as using the installation method with a stock FreeBSD image boots without a problem.
