Title: Cheap Hardware for VPN Client?
Post by: prahn on April 28, 2021, 10:45:32 am
Does anybody has a recommendation for a cheap hardware, where I can install OPNsense?
This device should only work as a VPN client, behind a different router!

I would like to pay around 50 EUR, at least below 100 EUR, could be a used gadget of course.
Does anybody has a recommendation for that?

Thanks for input.

Regards,
prahn

For that use case OPNsense might be overkill. I would probably use OPNsense for the server and OpenWrt for the clients. OpenWrt runs on many cheap embedded routers.

OPNsense officially only supports x86_64 which makes 50 € rather unrealistic. ARM builds are still experimental, but if you're up for it you could try a Raspberry Pi.

Or something like this: https://store.gl-inet.com/collections/all-wifi-devices/products/gl-ar300m-mini-smart-router if you only need a VPN client running up to 20..50 Mbps (depending on VPN type). Unfortunately OPNsense doesn't run on it.

Grab an brand SFF PC with Intel Core-ish Pentium G, 4 RAM, 250 HDD and you are good to go. If you demand AES-NI for better VPN speeds you will need at least i5-2400, but these are close to 100 EUR. May be low-profile Intel/Broadcom NIC will be needed also.
