Hi Vinc,

240 GB is exactly double the size that is recommended: https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/hardware.html

Hi ,

Why are you such a big disk. I have a 32 GB SD card and it's quiet enough.

Hi,

I’m also on an APU2C4 with a Transcend 32 GB mSATA SSD (amd64 (64bit) serial image) OPNSense 17.7. Disk usage is about 4%. Apart from an OpenVPN-server, my installation is pure vanilla. How come that the recommended disk size differ that much, (x4) from mine and I still seem to have a vast space for manoeuvring?

P.S. Don’t forget to activate the thermal sensors.

I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the OPNSense team for a great product :)

Regards,

Hi Miroco,

With many web pages running into tens of MB, a squid proxy cache will have a fair appetite for disk space, this also grows with the number of users.

The minimum storage requirement on the page I cited is 4 GB, which is closer to your use case.

Space for logs is also important. Suricata or Netflow logs can grow quite rapidly.

Hi Bart and Franco,

Thank you both for straightening this out. I’m using this setup in a home environment (5 devices). I’m planning to activate at least Suricata intrusion detection (when I learn how to), does that mean I’m low on storage?

No, not at all. The recommended disk space is a guideline for a SMB type setup with several activated subsystems and high average traffic from tens or hundreds of devices where you can store traffic history for a while to go back later and analyse if necessary.

For most setups you can get away with the bare minimum of 4 GB, which simply accounts for enough space to upgrade in the future, install a few packages plugins, etc.

So you are good. :)

Cheers,
Franco
