Then when I went to see what "Change video font" would offer, I got:

"Segmentation fault (core dumped)"

Probably  ;). After upgrading the Dell BIOS, the screen now shows up with "(default)" in parens. Didn't test it further. Spoke to a guy at Dell support who said, "Well, we don't really support FreeBSD," but evidently their BIOS upgrades do end up better supporting FreeBSD in this case.
