Newbie has problem connecting to LAN After New Install

Hello,
I installed the software and assigned LAN and WAN to Em0 and EM1 respectively. The LAN address assigned is 192.168.1.1/24. I connected an Ethernet port from my network switch to the port EM0 on the PC then I tried to access the web app GUI using this in my browser:
http://192.168.1.1/24
but the browser timed out. I have not disconnected the WAN port from my cable modem as I didn't want to break my internet while testing the LAN access for my new box. I can't figure out what is wrong. I would really appreciate any ideas to get me up and running on my new router build. Thank you.
OK.... I think i forgot to enter the the interface IP address from the menu #2.
What IP address should i use for my LAN? Is there a preference? I can do a scan of my network to find a free one. Any info appreciated....thanks...

If you managed to get the other stuff right, delete the leading /24 from the link and try this:
http://192.168
.1.1
