nano image too large for 4G CF card
« on: April 25, 2016, 01:23:22 am »
Hi,

I'm new to OPNsense, just trying to set up a test system - I tried to copy the nano image onto a 4GB Kingston compact flash card. Unfortunately the image is larger than the card, so the image writer complains. I think I'm going to have to mess around with manually partitioning and copying over the contents of the image to get things working.

It may be better to slightly reduce the size of the image partitions next time to allow for a greater variety of CF cards.

The OPNsense team has worked on making the nano image as small as possible to avoid the issue you are having. Not all CF flash memory cards have the same amount of memory and this has been an issue for years for FreeBSD based nano images. It's been an uphill battle for other distributions as well. Take a look at the following forum link and you will see that the nano image has been reduced as far as possible with the amount of time the OPNsense team has dedicated to it:

How much space do you actually require on the 4gb CF card? If you want to build OPNsense from the source code you might be able to build a 2gb working nano build by modifying the nano.sh script.
