Just installed 21.7R1 on a VM in Proxmox 7.0. I have a Intel I350 T2 bypassed through to a vm. i have  Surfshark VPN on a vlan. I imported my config at install to a zfs install. I also have a lan bridge through proxmox.
Everything seems to work fine.

Don't know if you want to hear of successful installs here, but wanted to post of my experience.

Any preliminary data on how big if at all the performance hit would be on the APUs ? Also, would it be an official recommendation to use ZFS over UFS most everywhere ?

Just migrated one of the main FW VMs on VirtualBox, process is as follows:

1. Download/Save current config
      - I either fat-fingered something in the import process when booting 21.7.r1 or it something didn't work there

2. Install 21.7, chose ZFS stripped since it's a single hdd and there's no better alternative in the list

3. Reassign IP/mask/dhcp on the LAN since the import config step went wrong

4. Login the GUI, restore config - > FW reboots

5. Go to System - Firmware and run the automatic plugin troubleshooter which will reinstall all the plugins and move over to LibreSSL if that was the case.

When all is said in done there was one minor thing that popped up in the lobby, I tried sending a report so either it was sent 3 times or not at all - there was no confirmation displayed and I wasn't sure if any of the browser extensions might have interfered.


All things considered, it looks like a great upcoming release, will do another VM on VMware prior to attempting the APUs but wanted to say thanks Franco, Michael, Ad et all for the continuous effort in bringing about high quality minor and major releases.

Fat-fingering confirmed, the configuration importer works just fine and make everything else a lot easier & faster.

I think it would work on APU, but it would be best to use it in rack server type hardware, especially when you have multiple disks for whatever reason (stripe, mirror).

There will be no official recommendation for UFS or ZFS. Both will be supported in a likewise fashion.

Thank you for clarifying Franco.

I can confirm 21.7.r1 is working great on APU3 and APU4 with 4GB Ram. Surely running it stripped with only one SSD is a corner case. From my observations so far 21.7 feels snappier but I'm not sure if that's only phalcon 4 related or ZFS has a say too. For pkg management or updates in CLI it would seem though ZFS has a slight performance edge on the APUs...

Nice to hear. Stripe on one HD is not much of a corner case for everyone wanting to run ZFS for snapshot capabilities or backup purposes (zfs-send/zfs-receive). But as I said it depends on the hardware employed.

4GB RAM is certainly a good amount here although I wouldn't go any lower personally.

So 21.7 already got the new ZFS installer? I somehow missed that in the release notes - thought it was scheduled for 22.1?

It was already released in 21.1.5 where you can't really use it yet since there is no new installer image.

I used the the DVD iso. At the end I logged in as root, then selected option 8 (shell)
then entered opnsense-installer. Hope that helped.

The quicker way is to log in as "installer" with "opnsense" as password. I am pretty sure this works.

Curious if you tested using a vlan'd VF interface with the i350? I in 2.1.x it failed. Wonder if Opnsense compiled the fixed Intel drivers. I should download and test myself but time..

Hello I'm the Original Poster and have just installed 21.7.
Everything seems to work again.
I had a problem with vlans not coming up in 21.7R2, so I went back and installed from 21.1.9-1.
This is how I installed 21.7, Again In a ProxMox VM with a intel I350 passedthrough.

I have no additional repos, just the originals.
These are the plugins I have:

os-wol (installed)

From a working config I added a dvd iso in hardware.
Changed the boot order.
Booted to iso.
At importer I selected hard drive on the VM
OPNsense imported my config. I checked and my network was up and working.
Logged in as "installer" and used my password (not opnsense).
Installed using zfs. I did not select a drive until I was prompted too.
Selected reboot at end of installer, but contolled C to stop reboot.
At CLI I selected power down system and changed boot order to scsi0 in my VM config.
Removed my DVD from VM also.
Then fired up VM added everything came back up.

I thought maybe this would help someone.
