General Discussion / Re: newbie stuck on multi-wan

I ended up going with Failover mode to get max speeds while retaining sticky connections.

I was able to set up multi-wan load balance group with IPV4 only.
The first WAN is working but when I add the second, the gateway shows 100% packet loss.
The WAN2 interface shows green and proper IPs are allocated.
When I check the logs I see arpresolve: can't allocate llinfo for 192.168.100.1 on igc2.
I don't know where that IP is coming from as I have not input that anywhere.
Then I noticed an update needed to be done, so I did it, and after the reboot, the gateway came up.
I did a speed test and my upload speed was capped with the slowest of the two services.
WAN has 500/500
WAN2 has 500/10
The upload speed was 600/10
So I gained a bit on download and lost a ton on upload.
How do I fix that?
Then, I disconnected my laptop from the LAN port and connected my switch and nothing on the switch came up.
How do I fix that?
Thanks in advance.

General Discussion / Re: IPV6 setup problem

Thanks.
I read the blog but could not understand as it was way over my head.
Please provide instructions on how to use NPTV6.
I have read several forum entries on how to try to get multi-WAN IPV6 working and found conflicting information and insufficient detail.
There does not appear to be a simple straightforward approach.
If a detailed tutorial doesn't exist, this task appears to be in the too-hard category for me and I may have to return this Protectli box and go back to my ignorance-is-bliss TP-LINK/Omada setup.
I have the interfaces, firewall rules, and gateway groups set up.
IPV4 works but IPV6 won't flow.

Thanks.
I reverted to IPV6 CONFIG TYPE = DNCPV6 for both WANs and the LAN.
All gateways show UP, but I am still not being issued IPV6s.
I think I need to set ROUTER ADVERTISEMENTS to ASSISTED but ROUTER ADV doesn't show if TRACK INTERFACES is not used.
I can't use TRACK INTERFACE on the LAN because this is a dual-WAN system and I can only assign one WAN as the parent.
How do I get around that?

I have two separate WAN interfaces set to TRACK INTERFACE for IPV6 but I can only set 0 as the PREFIX ID for one of them.
I also wanted to set the LAN to TRACK INTERFACE but can't for the same reason.
How do I get around this?

General Discussion / newbie IPV4 vs IPV6 question
« on: November 16, 2024, 04:47:49 am »
Hello,
I am trying to set up a new opnsense box with dual WAN.
I noticed that the default WAN had both IPV4 and IPV6 support enabled, so I did the same for the second WAN.
I don't know if the two ISPs use IPV6 or not, so I enabled both in case they do.
Now, in all subsequent configs relating to the interfaces, IPV6 is now associated with the interface.
I also notice I now have 3 gateways (how did I end up with an extra one):
WAN_DHCP6 protocol IPV6 priority 256 description INTERFACE WAN_DHCP6 GATEWAY
WAN2_DHCP6 protocol IPV6 priority 256 description INTERFACE WAN2_DHCP6 GATEWAY
and WAN_GW protocol IPV4 priority defunct description WAN GATEWAY
Does opnsense fall back to IPV4 if no IPV6 is detected?
I saw a setting somewhere about having LAN track the interface, but with dual-WAN load balancing, how would I assign a single interface?
Can the network handle both IPV4 and IPV6 simultaneously if one ISP is on IPV4 and the other IPV6?

I think I may have figured it out.
My new interface appeared under INTERFACES.
I copied all the settings from the default WAN.
I hope that works.
I would delete my post but I can't find a DELETE option.

General Discussion / newbie stuck on multi-wan

Hello,
I need to add a second WAN to my new opnsense setup.
I googled the topic and also referenced https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/how-tos/multiwan.html
But all of the above assume the second WAN is already configured.
I cannot find instructions to actually add the second interface and identify it as a WAN and not a LAN.
When I go to INTERFACES > ASSIGNMENTS and add an interface, there isn't a way to identify it as a WAN.
So, how does opnsense know if the data is coming or going?
Thanks in advance.

Problem solved.
I just clicked SAVE on the page and put my laptop back to DHCP and it worked.

Thanks.
I did not change anything and my screen at SERVICES > ISC DHCPv4 > LAN reads:
SUBNET = 196.168.2.0
SUBNET MASK = 255.255.255.0
AVAILABLE RANGE = 196.168.2.1 - 192.168.2.254
RANGE FROM 192.168.2.10 TO 192.168.2.245
Everything else is blank.
Everything still looks correct.
I must be missing something.
Is the pool at another page?

Thanks.
I assigned the laptop 192.168.2.2
That worked.
What should I adjust the settings to?
DHCP is enabled and should have worked.

Hello,
I just received a protectli box with opnsense installed.
I set my own hostname and domain and DNS and took the defaults on the rest
I set the LAN IP ADDRESS to 192.168.2.1 to deconflict with another LAN and set a new root password.
The web GUI said it was going to reset but now nothing answers 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1.
I am stuck.
