Buongiorno,
vorrei chiedervi,gentilmente, dei consigli, se decidessi di installare l'ultima release di OPNsense(qual'e l'ultima release?) su un PC desktop con architettura a 64bit  quale  procedura di installazione devo adottare?

Qual'è la pagina ufficiale da cui devo scaricare OPNsense?
Devo scaricare l'immagine ISO e masterizzarla su un DVD,  cambiare l'ordine di boot del PC (e indicare il lettore DVD)e poi farà tutto OPNsense a cancellare il vecchio sistema operativo a creare le partizioni e ad installare OPNsense?

Mi devo accertare che il bios supporti il boot anche da USB, così posso creare una chiavetta USB bootabile con la distro OPNsense?

Ho dato uno sguardo al sito che mi hai, gentilmente consigliato, ma pare che i prezzi siano un po' più alti del budget a cui avevo pensato cioè intorno ai 100€.

Un computer fisso con questa configurazione potrebbe andar bene? a cui dovrei aggiungere una seconda scheda di rete.

opnsense supporta l'architettura 32 o 64 bit quindi sulla carta dovresti riuscirci. sappi pero che la vpn comporta molto lavoro della CPU quindi non so che prestazioni potresti raggiungere

Grazie mille macmaniac per la tua disponibilità.
Per la tua esperienza,se decidessi di acquistare un notebook "usato" da spendere poco (sul quale monterei una scheda di rete esterna Ethernet - USB in modo da avere due schede di rete WAN/LAN) Che  caratteristiche hardware dovrebbe avere?
Architettura 32 o 64 bit? (magari se devo acquistarlo mi oriento su un processore a 64 bit? in modo da poter installare le future release di OPNsense pensate per i sistemi a 64 bit (é indifferente se Intel o AMD?)
HD da....?
RAM...?
Che Processore? quanti core?
Dovrebbe avere anche un lettore masterizzatore DVD in modo che una volta creato il disco bootabile con l'immagine di OPNsense si possa avviare il notebook dal DVD contenente l'immagine di OPNsense.

Buongiorno,
mi chiamo Sereno e sono appassionato di software libero e da poco mi sto avvicinando a OPNsense.

Pensando ad un modo "sicuro"  di collegarmi da remoto alle telecamere di rete, mi è venuta l'idea di dotare la mia LAN di un router/firewall basato su OPNsense e attivare un server VPN, in quanto so che OPNsense gestisce le VPN.
Stavo pensando di dedicare a OPNsense  un vecchio PC desktop  pentium II, HD 512 Mb e Ram se non ricordo male 256 Mb circa e sistema Operativo Windows 98(che andrebbe cancellato)
Però non ho capito se questo hardware che vi ho descritto é compatibile o meno con OPNsense.
Se qualcuno mi può aiutare  a individuare l'hardware compatibile con l'ultima release di OPNsense  gliene sarei grato.

A firewall which at its heart is what Opnsense is has an 'in' and an 'out'. Traffic arriving on the 'in' side 'Internet or WAN' is filtered and passed to the 'LAN', that explains it in simple terms. It's more complex than that but take it as a base. So if you have an 'In' and an 'Out' you need two NICs or network ports.


Now you can do it with one NIC using VLANs, but then you need a VLAN capable switch to separate the LAN and the WAN traffic. Does that make sense?

Can I install OPNsense on an old desktop PC that has these features?

Processor pentium II; HD 512 Mb

Ram 256 Mb or less

Windows 98 OS.

1 single network card (I need to add another card)

1 CD player (that doesn't work, I have to have it repaired otherwise I can't boot the PC from CD)

If so, how should I proceed?



I think the things to do are as follows, please correct me if I am wrong

1) check if the PC hardware on which I would like to install OPNsense is adequate (and here you should help me, if you can tell me if the hardware of my old PC is adequate for the latest version of OPNsense)

2)add another network card

3) download the ISO file of the latest version of OPNsense (could you tell me the exact link from where to download OPNsense?)

4) create a bootable CD and boot the computer from CD (first, however, I must proceed to reformat the HD because I currently have the operating system Windows 98 on the disk and being a small hard disk I can not put even, OPNsense if I do not remove first Windows98!  Right?  )

To delete Windows 98 and make the PC ready for the installation of OPNsense what procedure should I follow?

Are these points that I have indicated correct?  Or did I forget something?

Good morning,
I am a new member of this community and I would like to share with you the desire that I have to learn how to use this interesting distro to equip my current home LAN with some advanced features (firewall, VPN server) that will allow me to make the LAN more secure and securely access remotely, through a VPN, to the LAN network cameras.

Unfortunately I'm a newbie as far as computer networks are concerned, so I hope to receive help from this community both in finding the right hardware for the current version of OPNsense and in installing and configuring OPNsense on the identified hardware.



I was thinking of dedicating to OPNsense an old desktop PC assembled by Olidata pentium II, HD 512 Mb and Ram less than 256 Mb and Windows 98 operating system.

The idea is to connect the PC, on which I will install OPNsense, to my current modem /router (Linksys WAG200G) after putting it in bridge.

I wanted to ask you therefore if the desktop PC mentioned above, can be good for installing OPNsense and if there is a step by step guide to proceed with the installation of OPNsense.

Reading some forums everyone says that you have to install a second network card but I did not understand why, if someone can explain it to me, kindly, I would be grateful.

And if so, what are the characteristics of the network card to be added to the PC?

Buonasera, sono un nuovo iscritto in questa comunità e vorrei insieme a voi condividere il desiderio che ho di imparare ad usare questa interessante distro per dotare la mia attuale LAN domestica di alcune funzionalità avanzate (firewall, server VPN) che mi permetteranno di rendere più sicura la LAN e accedere in sicurezza da remoto, attraverso una VPN, alle telecamere di rete della LAN.
Purtroppo sono un newbie per quanto riguarda le reti informatiche, per cui spero di ricevere un aiuto da questa comunità sia nell'individuare l'hardware adatto per l'attuale versione di OPNsense che nell'installare e configurare OPNsense sull'hardware individuato.

Stavo pensando di dedicare a OPNsense  un vecchio PC desktop  assemblato dell'Olidata pentium II, HD 512 Mb e Ram meno di 256 Mb e sistema Operativo Windows 98.
