I must admit that I tend to prefer traditional versioning (e.g. version.revision.patch), but I absolutely agree that year.month makes sense for projects such as opnsense.
I hope you can consider replacing month with simply "major release". e.g. 21.1 is the first major release and 21.2 is the second (july/august) release of the year. Even something as simple as that would be an improvement in my humble opinion as it gives some more flexibility regarding release date. That being said - this is purely nitpick and quite honestly it does not matter that much. It is just (for me) a minor annoyance.
Anyway looking forward to the 21.1 release
