18.1 Legacy Series / Re: OpenVPN problem (can only ping some devices on LAN)
« on: March 29, 2018, 07:00:32 am »
Yep, agree, you should definitely not overlap the two networks. Why not assign something like 10.10.0.0/24 for the OpenVPN network? Also make sure the local firewalls of your LAN clients allow ping requests coming from other subnets.

Ok, the next logical question is if you have added a firewall rule to allow access from the OpenVPN net/interface to the firewall's port 53 (or the entire firewall / lan subnet, aka "any to any" rule) :)

Heh, glad you worked it out.
We actually have a very similar setup, almost the same hardware, same ISP (except maybe that i'll be using a second Mikrotik for the failover multiwan setup with a Huawei 3G modem in it, the first one i use for the guest wifi network, which works, btw, very well, you just have to isolate it as per the manual or similar to it). Note that you cannot have the same gateway for both WANs, it will not work, so check the modem just to be sure, if you got it from RDS.

Unrelated, but you might find it useful.

For best OpenVPN performance, you could also follow this guide. Its main purpose is to speed up IDPS, but has a significant impact on OpenVPN as well. I found tons of posts on the internet as to how to optimize OpenVPN throughput, but dcol's post was the only one which really helped, without any other OpenVPN parameters.

It worked out for me (deleting the custom value completely, leaving the field empty), i'm really curious if it does for you as well. Please report back, PPPoE has been a headache for some of us :)

My oldest working setup is a 199x something Romanian made CIP computer:

It needed a TV and cassettes for it to work :P I still have it, the unit itself, without the power supply, which I modified to build a controlled access system, based on public telephone cards :)) But it was built like a tank, I'm sure it still works :p

Actually, your issues are very similar to this:

You might need a few minutes to read the entire conversation...

But, there's a complete rework going on here and there, so soon this will get fixed.

I'm not sure captive portal plays well with virtual ips. Maybe somebody else can jump in to help you (?).

If you feel your issue is fixed, you can prepend [Solved] to the title of your first post :)
