22.1 Legacy Series / Can a gateway group be used for outgoing interface for Unbound?
« on: March 04, 2022, 09:07:27 am »
Like the title suggests:
Can a gateway group be used for outgoing interface for Unbound?

I have 3 OpenVPN clients running and created a gateway group, as failover.
So when VPN 1 goes does, it switches to VPN 2, etc.

In Unbound I would like to be able to choose the VPN Gateway Group as outgoing "interface".
So when VPN 1 is up, it will do the request through VPN 1, but when VPN 1 is down and it switched to VPN 2 it will do the DNS request through VPN 2.

Is that even possible?
I know I can select multiple interfaces in Unbound but it will use them all and not only one (which is currently active).

I'm migrating my install from pfSense to OPNsense and I'm going to run OPNSense on a Qotom Q355G4 machine.
The Qotom has a 4 port Intel igb.

On pfSense it was advisable to add the following to the (System) Tunables:
dev.igb.0.eee_disabled=1
dev.igb.1.eee_disabled=1
dev.igb.2.eee_disabled=1
dev.igb.3.eee_disabled=1

This disabled Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) for the 4 ports.

Is this also needed for OPNsense?
Any Tunables I need to know of before switching completely?

Sound nice mate!
I'll give it a go than.

I'm running an APU1D4 from PC Engines.
1 GHz dual Bobcat core with 64 bit support with 4GB ram and a mSata 16GB drive.
Should be pretty much ok for home use I guess.

Thanks, I understand completely.

Do you have an ETA on .18?

Is it correct the latest downloadable version is 15.7.11?
.17 is nowhere to be found. Do I just install .11 and update to .17?
Or is there a .17 installation file as well and am I a little blind? :)

That sounds nice!

Does OPNsense offer IDS and filtering?

Are the hardware requirements the same or does one need more resources?

Ok, thanks. For the time being I'll be using an external Wifi AP than.

Thanks for the replies!

I have an APU1D4 with a Compex WLE200NX wifi card.
I do have another wireless router which will be "installed" as external wifi AP.

I would like a firewall, probably some filtering (porn etc) and maybe IDS.
QoS for VOIP. OpenVPN.
It will run in a home environment.

Are the hardware requirements the same or does one need more resources?

I'll give the link a go as well.

I don't want to start a (flame) war just looking for opinions about the two products.

What are the main differences between the two?
What are the advantages/disavantages of OPNsense agains pfSense and visa versa?
Why would I choose one or the other?

Again I'm not trying to be a smartass and open a war just trying to get some answers so I know what suits my needs best: OPNsense or pfSense.

Thanks for the reply.
I have put info about the problem in the last 2 sentences of my thread:

"In pfSense I had a lot of errors: "kernel: ath0: stuck beacon; resetting (bmiss count 4)"
It resulted in wireless speeds not stable, iPhones not keeping their wifi signal."

These are the main problems I'm having.

15.7 Legacy Series / [SOLVED] Wireless support in OpnSense
« on: November 03, 2015, 01:23:28 pm »
I have an APU1D4 with a Compex WLE200NX wireless card.
Running pfSense on this device is great but wireless is not working as it supposed to.
Therefor I'm looking for alternatives and came across OpnSense.

Can someone please tell me if support for wireless (especially the Compex WLE200NX --> Atheros AR9280) is any good in OpnSense?

In pfSense I had a lot of errors: "kernel: ath0: stuck beacon; resetting (bmiss count 4)"
It resulted in wireless speeds not stable, iPhones not keeping their wifi signal.

Thanks in advance.
