Intrusion Detection and Prevention / wildcards in user defined Intrusion Detection rules

How do I create rules using wildcards? I have tried xx.xx.xx/24, xx.xx.xx.* and neither work.

I apologize if this is a stupid question. This is the third day my firewall has been running.
