General Discussion / How the pipes actually work?
« on: August 05, 2020, 12:31:03 am »
Hi,
I saw lots of tutorials about QOS with pipes and rules, but none of them explained how the pipes will act in certain situations.

In FreshTomato QOS is also based on kind of pipes, but there its clear how it works.
In there pipes are set for each service. You can set minimal guaranteed bandwidth for each service, but maximum is not set, so if other services are not using their bandwidth, other services can use even 100%.

I wonder how it works in OPNsense? I can set proportions between pipes, but how it is when one pipe is empty - not in use ... is its bandwidth still reserved or can be used by other service temporarily?

Thanks
Al

20.7 Legacy Series / What happen to os-unbound-plus?
« on: August 03, 2020, 10:36:28 pm »
After reinstallation and import of config.xml I can't install "os-unbound-plus".
It is red on plugins list, no any information available.
When I try to install it I get following message:

Code: [Select]
***GOT REQUEST TO INSTALL: os-unbound-plus***
Updating OPNsense repository catalogue...
OPNsense repository is up to date.
All repositories are up to date.
pkg: No packages available to install matching 'os-unbound-plus' have been found in the repositories
Checking integrity... done (0 conflicting)
Nothing to do.
***DONE***

I did try to change repository mirror, flavour etc. Nothing helped.
Any idea?

Hardware and Performance / WiFi or not WiFi? Any suggestions for USB WiFi dongle or M.2 WiFi card?
« on: July 26, 2020, 10:17:27 pm »
FreeBSD and OPNsense are new for me, but I already learned that WiFi is very dificult topic here.
My OPNsense "experiment" is built on cheap HP desktop with miniITX mobo and celeron N3050 on it.
It has only one NIC built in, but this already sorted with TPlink UE300 connected to one of 2 USB 3.0.
Unfortunately as I already checked - buil in WIFI M.2 card is not supported, as NETGEAR N150 dongle from drawer as well.

I know, I could use my curent router as AP only, but I wish to clean up the shelf a bit, so prefered option is to add WiFi functionality to OPNsense machine.

And here are my questions:

Is there any WiFi M.2 card or USB dongle that would work with OPNsense as AP and would support both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz ?
I prefer 5GHz, but need to use also 2.4GHz for compatibility with one or two devices. But 5GHz is essential.
What chipset, or maybe exact device from amazon would you suggest?

Or maybe it is better to use external device anyway? What to use in that case? Would WiFi extender be good?

BTW. I don't need AX or even AC3200 - I think that any AC would be good for me.

Thanks :)
