19.1 Legacy Series / 19.1.7 update successful but no GUI
« on: May 19, 2019, 01:58:04 am »
Anyone can't get access to GUI after 19.1.7 update? I can use putty and get to console and verified that the LAN (igb0) v4 192.168.x.x is as before the update. I rebooted it via console but still could not access the GUI. My local network can access the internet and other devices in the local network so there is no issue there. Just can't get to GUI.

I tried option 11 in console (reload all services) thinking GUI might be a service that got stuck during booting but the script stalled at "configuring LAN interface" or similar. At this point there is no access to internet until I force reboot the opnsense box. At the end still no GUI.

19.1 Legacy Series / Block a device by IP
« on: May 11, 2019, 12:34:35 pm »
Hi, is there a way to temporarily block internet or network access based on IP or MAC address of a device? I have assigned static addresses for every device on my network. I wonder if I can use Mac Access Control to deny a MAC address? Cheers.

19.1 Legacy Series / GUI and resources
« on: May 04, 2019, 02:23:28 am »
Hi, I wonder how much it cost in terms of hardware resources (CPU, RAM etc) when accessing GUI? Is there a rule of thumb? Cheers

19.1 Legacy Series / Can't get to GUI anymore
« on: April 13, 2019, 11:32:08 am »
I set up my opnsense box and able to reach gui via 192.168.8.1 on a test system. I shut down the box and plugged it into my home network. All devices take its IP from DHCP server. After plugging in, my home network is able to connect to internet but I can o longer reach the box via 192.168.8.1. At this point, all devices' IP is in 192.168.8.xx range and can ping 192.168.8.1. I can't understand why I can't get to GUI.
I unplugged it from my home network and reverted back to the test system (ie a laptop connected directly to the opnsense box). Found out I also cannot reach GUI anymore using 192.168.8.1 but I can ping it. Since I do not have console via VGA (stuck at booting), is my only option is to reinstall everything?

19.1 Legacy Series / Memory usage at 60% (2.4 out of 4GB)
« on: April 10, 2019, 02:32:22 pm »
I am just starting to play around my fresh install. My opnsense box is only attached to a laptop at the moment via network cable. In addition to updating to v19.1.5 I activated intrusion detection and clamav. Rebooted several times and seems to be running ok. Can someone look at the picture and let me know if my box is robust enough to handle my home network of 45 devices and broadband speed of 55Mbps. Cheers.

19.1 Legacy Series / Strange problem about stuck at booting
« on: April 07, 2019, 12:36:35 am »
I managed to get latest and updated v19.1.5 working. My dashboard GUI looks fine and works but the console is showing something different - see pic. Looks like it is still stuck at booting. I can restart console via GUI but each time it is still stuck at booting. Is that normal? If not I won't "roll out into production" even though it is only for home network.

18.7 Legacy Series / Updates to v18.7.10
« on: March 03, 2019, 07:45:32 am »
Hi, will there be any further updates to v18.7.10 without upgrading to v19.1? That seems to be the latest version that can run on my hardware. Will I still be able to get community support for v18.7.10?

19.1 Legacy Series / v19.1 installaton stuck at "booting..."
« on: March 02, 2019, 01:47:40 am »
Hi, I was able to install the previous v18 without any problems. However, the latest v19.1 seems not to like my hardware (which have not changed since v18). My USB boots up with the menu and after loading scrips, it got stuck at the blue highlighted "booting...". I have disabled emulation 64 60 port and that got me through v18 installation. I tried to enable it but the only difference is that mu HW kept rebooting in an endless cycle after reaching "booting...". Any help or comment is appreciated.

Intrusion Detection and Prevention / Disable all hardware offloading - VLAN Hardware Filtering
« on: January 01, 2019, 12:25:27 am »
Hi, I am following the awesome post by elektroinside on setting up IDS/IPS. In regards to hardware offloading, I am not sure which option I should select for VLAN Hardware Filtering- enable/disable/leave default.
Not sure if my understanding is correct -  enable means the NIC is doing the work and disable means the software is doing the work (ie higher CPU overheads).
Please help?

18.7 Legacy Series / Misc settings in OPNsense 18.7.9
« on: December 31, 2018, 11:18:54 am »
Hi, my specs are 64GB SSD, 4GB RAM and Intel Atom E3827 Dual Core @ 1.74. There are 3 settings in misc I need help with:

Swap file - Add a 2 GB swap file to the system
/var RAM disk - Use memory file system for /var
/tmp RAM disk - Use memory file system for /tmp

I am uncertain if I should enable the above. I simply do not know enough of linux-stuff to decide. Any help will be appreciated.

Hardware and Performance / Opnsense in Nexcom DNA120
« on: December 30, 2018, 06:11:01 am »
Hi, thanks to this forum I am now able to install Opnsense in a Nexcom DNA120 which I think is the same as a Sophos SG115. My specs are 64GB SSD, 4GB RAM and Intel Atom E3827 Dual Core @ 1.74. I am using it to protect my home network consisting of 30 active devices and my internet speed is about 55mbps up/25mbps down. I am wondering if my hardware is adequate to run full suite of Opnsense? I have read the hardware requirements doc but would like to know real life experiences.

Hardware and Performance / Is my hardware adequate?
« on: April 10, 2016, 04:08:15 am »
Hi, I have a spare desktop and have installed Opnsense 16.1 64bit. I am able to access web admin GUI so I think I installed it correctly. My hardware as follows:

DELL Optiplex GX620 Dual Core
Intel EM64T Pentium D CPU 3.40GHz
240GB SSD
4GB DDR2 SDRAM
Onboard Gigabit LAN
2 NICs 3COM 10/100 (plans to change to Gigabit ones later)

I know above spec is old but will it work for my small home LAN. At home I have 4 desktops, 3 laptops and 4 smartphones/tablets. At night all are being used simultaneously.

Can a keen eye tell me if my hardware is up to the task or do I need a quad core? Thanks

16.1 Legacy Series / [SOLVED] Unable to access GUI (v16.1)
« on: April 02, 2016, 07:21:20 am »
Hi all, I am totally new to firewall OS. Attracted to Opnsense because of its non-command line approach. I installed the 64bit version on my ancient DELL Optiplex GX620, Pentium D 3.4GHz, 240GB SSD and 4GB RAM. It has an onboard NIC plus I chucked in 2 3COM NICs.

With default installation I get the following configuration:
WAN (x10)  ->
LAN (bge0) -> v4: 192.168.1.1/24

I plugged in the onboard NIC to a Linksys EA6700 router (DHCP enabled) and my laptop to one of the 3COM NICs. I did not plugin the onboard NIC to my modem because I disabled DHCP.

Problem is I am unable to access web GUI from my laptop. I used Chrome and entered 192.168.1.1.

I am sure I have made a rookie mistake somewhere. Appreciate if someone can point it out. Thanks.
