I would try to take the unit outside the wall enclosure and test for a while. The 10G sfp+ RJ45 (10Gbase-T Copper) modules I occasionally use get really hot, no matter how much traffic.

Maybe that adds a lot to ambient temperature in a very dense environment?

For testing, you could also try a 1Gb/s sfp+ copper module, although you won’t reach the usual traffic. But they are much cooler.

The 10GB SFP does get very hot so that probably adds to the ambient temperature I would agree.  When I take it out and let it run outside of the media enclosure I get about 45-48C temps which I guess is normal.  I may just end up strapping a 120mm case fan with wire ties to this thing.

Just to provide an update on my situation.  I forgot to mention that the unit sits inside a wall mounted structured cabling/media enclosure.  It is perforated with holes if you see via the link.

When I have the door open the temps hover around 48c on the thermal sensor readings even at moderate load.  When I have the door closed the temps hover around 56-57c. 

This leads me to believe that there isn't enough airflow in the enclosure and combined with ambient temperatures is what is causing the unit to have above average temps.  I guess I'll try to possibly install some case fans into cut outs on this enclosure door and see if that helps at all. 

Even so, I don't mind letting the device run hot even at 56-57c as long as it won't cause any damage to the device.

I just used an IR Thermometer on my unmodified DEC740. Room is 25.1.°C and device enclosue is 46.2°C. I have an SFP+ Fibre module in it and its connected to a 10G Switch. Its doing just light webbrowsing and streaming traffic right now.

Its also running Suricata which is pretty CPU heavy.

Can I ask what you're thermal sensor reading in the opnsense UI has in it? If you don't have it enabled you'd need to add the widget in the dashboard.

Opening any device won't void the warranty. The US and the EU have strict consumer protection laws.

CPU usage is mostly sitting at 0% but can periodically spike to 50% every few minutes.  This with all the services i'm running that I've stated previously.

My DEC740 is completely original - nothing has been modified. Connected to the switch via 10G DAC cable and via 1G LAN to the cable modem (Vodafone 1000/50).

Thanks for the info, do you think it's worth contacting Deciso support to see what they can say about it?

When I replaced my RAM and SSD, I noticed that the thermal coupling is not the best. I decided to remove the thermal paste and repastied it with something better.

You can see this here and here. When you open the device, be careful not to scratch the paint!

Thanks Meyer, I did review these videos.  I did open the device and install a 16GB module but left the SSD original.  The thermal paste did look dry to me so I carefully wiped off the original paste and I applied some thermaltake TG 3 generously to make sure full coverage. 

At this point after doing all that I am running with 1x SFP 10G copper module with 16GB original SSD, replaced thermal paste.  I run Zenarmor with subscription, openvpn occasionally, HAProxy, maybe a few more apps in teh future.  We have 1 gig fiber internet to the house and the speed tests are fine no issues there.  The ambient temps in the room where the device sits are about 75-80F. At this time the device sits at 56.6C cpu temps with 4 cores 8 threads SMT enabled.  I did receive the device with SMT disabled for some reason not sure why but I had to manually go into bios and enable SMT to make 4 cores 8 threads.  Most reviews I saw mention that the device remains relatively cool, warm to the touch but not hot.  My device is HOT, cannot really keep your hand there for too long.  If that is normal then fine I have no issue and that is just how the device runs passively cooled I guess.  The SOC has a 105C junction temp rating.  I'm just concerned because I've never had any opnsense device run so hot and I purchased this from Deciso thinking it would be an optimal setup with the 10GB interfaces and enough performance for what I"m doing.   I didn't expect such high temps though.  But if that seems normal then it is what it is.  I did void the warranty by upgrade the ram and replacing the thermal paste so no going back there.  Just disappointed with the thermal profile of this device.

my DEC740 is located in a network cabinet in the basement. It runs a household with three people including two home office workstations, traffic shaping, OpenVPN and various VLANs. It's currently 16°C in the basement and the temperature of the DEC740 fluctuates somewhere between 33 and 35°C throughout the day with a bandwidth used of between 1 and 50 Mbps.

My DEC750 is running at 45c after a day of working from home over VPN.
PPPoE symmetrical gigabit fibre, Zenarmour
Has a 10g SFP+ to RJ45 module as well, which is a bit toasty

About 20c ambient

Yours sounds a little warm, but not overly so IMHO

Thanks for the responses guys my ambient temp is about 25C and i'm running about 57C on the cpu with my wife and I working from home. 

Can I ask if you have the original 4GB RAM setup or modified with more RAM? are you running 4 cores 8 threads or 4 cores 4 threads?

Which BIOS version?

Hi all,
Not sure if this is normal or not but my dec740 recently purchased is running about 50-55C.  Wondering if that is a normal range for this device.  I am running zenarmor, opnevpn, looking to run HAProxy as well.  Wanted to see what other experiences have been with this device.  I do live in Florida US so ambient temps here are a bit higher but the room is anywhere from 73-80F.  Just want to make sure nothing is wrong with my device. 

update:
Sustained 10GB transfers take the cpu temps to 65C+.

Tutorials and FAQs / HAProxy service is disabled after configuring Public Service

New here so please take it easy on me.  I'm having a strange issue following this tutorial.  Everything works out fine until I get to the Public Services part.  After I configure "0_SNI_frontend" as pictured the service is disabled and I am unable to enable it again until I either delete or disable the public service.  Haven't been able to find any conversation about this particular issue.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
