Hardware and Performance / Intel I226-V input errors / slow WAN speed
« on: December 22, 2023, 11:18:54 am »
Short Description:
New OPNSense install on current intel hardware, based on some china board. Mainboard Embedded are
- 4 x Intel X710 10G SFP+ and
- 6 x Intel I226-V 2.5G interfaces
The I226-V interfaces show input errors. As one of the symptoms, WAN download speed drops from ~500MBits to ~25MBits when using a I226 interface as gateway.
At this point, it seems unclear whether the problem is hardware or igc driver related.
Long story:
Connecting anything to any I226 Port causes input errors. Errors are reported as sysctl dev.igc.5.mac_stats.missed_packets and input errors at ifinfo. X710 Ports work perfect.
There is no significant difference whether:
Cabling / speed
- direct connection between OPNsense<->AnyComputer
- switch in between
- auto-negotiated port speed (1G/2.5G)
- manually set fixed port speed (1G/2.5G)
Config
- any offloading disabled / enabled
- hw.igc.eee_setting disabled / enabled
- dev.igc.5.fc disabled / enabled
- net.inet.rss.enabled / disabled
- full sysctl see link below
Also, I have tried all other sorts of "somewhere recommended" tunables, just as shots in the dark.
Since I currently have no physical console access, I did not try modify BIOS settings yet.
Trying to debug the issue for a few days now, there seem to be possible issues with the I225 / I226 chips. Others say they work perfect, also here in the forum.
Tests:
After some initial ookla speed tests on WAN, Iperf was used to do testing, both running against and through OPNsense. CPU is no limiting factor on either end. Besides the iperf test load, there was only some light additional load on the box.
Test results shown here are on igc5 connected at 1Gbit/s. As seen, errors only rise when OPNsense is receiving. Sending always gets full 1G speed without any errors. Multiple clients / switches testet.
- no errors shown on switch or remote side
- no other errors in OPNsense except for the "in errors"
- no VLAN involved
- interface IP OPNsense 192.168.96.1 on igc5
If anyone has more ideas on how to debug this issue, I would be glad for any further input. Any help is greatly appreciated. I will also post more of my own findings here in this thread.
