Title: 16.1 and 16.7 update sets have been removed
Post by: franco on September 13, 2018, 02:09:13 pm
Hi all,

We have 4 major releases out in the wild so we discontinue online update support for the 16.1 and 16.7 versions effective immediately.

If you are stuck on a 16.x system now please use an image to import your config and install a recent version, e.g.:

https://pkg.opnsense.org/releases/mirror/

Cheers,
Franco

Hi Franco,

We've some remote installations, that unfortunately can't be done a full remote install, there is some other way to solve this?

Hi Julio,

In general 2 years should suffice to update. What version are we talking about?

I still have the sets and could push them to a location you want so you can use the custom mirror option, but I'm not sure how easy custom mirrors are in 16.1 or 16.7 because the versions are quite old and we've added a lot of flexibility over the years because the firmware updates were not flexible enough.

All the more reason to keep them somewhat up to date.

Cheers,
Franco

Hi Franco!

Our old versions are 16.7.

If you could send me link to download it, I'll appreciated that!

Thanks a lot!

I would prefer upload instructions, preferably sftp, as I don't know where to publish it without causing the mirrors to resync it which would work against the general idea of deprecating the use of older versions.

You should at least issue a warning (similar to a new release issued), when old versions will be deleted. Not in ad-hoc manner, like randomly after 18.7.3 is out. Would be preferred to push this info right into the face of users when they are e.g. at the download page. Currently neither the https://opnsense.org/download/ nor the on-device opnsense webgui / firmware update says anything about when the actual release should expire.

Take this as kind recommendation, to make the product more mature in terms of support predictability.

It's a notice, not a warning.

The note regarding clear expiration dates would still be welcome addition in a well seen URL / location.

Note: Only the latest major version receives binary updates. The four latest major versions are kept on the mirrors. Updates performed within 2 years are the minimum requirement from our side to users.

If you copy paste this post right under the downloads @https://opnsense.org/download/  I have reached my goal :-)
It would be a better place there, than in this hidden forum thread.
