Title: I do not see the "easy rules" option in the firewall
Post by: MatuScien on June 18, 2018, 09:37:29 am

Hello everyone.

I am new to the forum and to the product. I want to set it up for my small company but I detected one thing after upgrading from version 17 to 18.

In the "Firewall" panel, in the "log files" part, there was a view called "Normal View" where it allowed you to make a trace and add a rule easily with "Easy Rule"

Does this no longer exist in version 18?

Thanks.

Not currently... it's a feature in transition. It will re-appear at some point.

I hope the 'easy rule' feature reappears before the competition releases v2.5 . I use this feature a lot and it's a show stopper for migration.

Hi,

We have no relation to 2.5, try to work on our own issues which in this case is an API for the firewall and alias components to bring this feature back on the table in a clean way.

I accept what you are saying.

I suspect that v2.5 of the other product will push quite a few like me to migrate to OPNsense. Their soon to be mandatory AES-NI requirement has brought me here.

Each migrator will evaluate OPNsense according to their own use case priorities. The importance of 'easy rules' will be different for everyone. I didn't realise how much I use this feature in my rule development process until now.

I look forward to seeing the return of easy rules to OPNsense.

Thanks, and I fully understand what you ask for.

We have been struggling with identity perception from a certain angle where nothing is new and improved, everything is rather just missing bits and pieces, maybe showstoppers to some. I think we stopped facing this direction when 17.1 was out because we have tried to keep ahead and have done so in multiple areas and started focusing on other user groups instead. A lot of Linux folks got interested and attracted and now we simply try to strike a balance between the time we have, the things the community wants (and frequently asks for) and the goodies that we think are nowhere else to be found.

I do hope that we can fulfil future user's requirements, even if it takes a bit of time to get there. The only thing I worry about is "I'll migrate when I have everything" which begs the question why migrate in the first place. Just thinking out loud. So the difference between this and a healthy attitude is help out to bring these features in or adopt early and drum up support within this community. :)

Cheers,
Franco

When I first switched to Opnsense - back in December, I too was not so sure, but I made the decision that I would switch and I do not regret doing so. Like you I at first missed pfblocker and easy rules, now I do not miss them at all. I have perfectly good working solutions for anything I used pfblocker for. As for easy rules I really don't need it, I have learned more by creating my own rules, sometimes something did not quite work the way I expected but I found out why and solved the problem.

Over the last six months many things have been added to Opnsense that make it in many ways superior. As an advert used to say in the UK,  "The future's bright, the future's orange."

Thank you very much everyone for the clarifications.

For me the easy rules are necessary, so I'll wait before changing the version.

Thanks again!
