Post by: lilsense on June 13, 2018, 01:09:20 am
Is there a small router that one can install opnsense on to use it as WiFi/router/VPN like hootoo Tripmate Titan or GL.iNet GL-AR750?

Only has one LAN port, guess you could try using a USB<>LAN adaptor, some do work I believe. Otherwise you'd need to use VLANs and that can get tricky.

Something like this would do.

No my bad... it doesn't, not yet anyway. It's on the drawing board though.

Probably many people have thought about how to make sure that there is always Internet in the car and not only the driver but also passengers can use it. In particular, this topic is relevant for long trips and, of course, when children are in the car. And what if this device is also easily removable and can be taken from the car to the country house and continue to use there. The Wi-Fi coverage area can be about 50 meters with its small size. It can be powered from a regular USB connector in the car, and if it is not, then by buying a USB adapter in the cigarette lighter. I travel by train https://www.dbauskunft.com/de/, rather than by car, and the Internet is always available to me.

Starlink has an RV service, discussed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwoz49N7Qsk. There are quite a few catches. Users report that it works in motion but it is not currently approved for this use and violates their TOS. Interesting tech but my impression is that they are having some technical, quality control and organizational issues delivering on the promise in general (not just the RV service).

How to have the Internet with you on the road, in the car, or on the train.

One word, hotspot. you can use your phone's hotspot to do this. My car already provides Wifi service. :)

Small travel router comes in handy in the Hotels, where you want to reduce the use of their Wifi. Set up a small router to connect to the Wifi and VPN, then you connect all your gadgets to your travel router.
