Title: Is there anyway to migrate a pfsense configuration
Post by: liam on May 21, 2018, 09:45:51 pm
Hi
I have a current pfsense setup with about 30 static DHCP entries, half a dozen Unbound host overrides and some incoming ports configured.

Is there anyway to import these into opnsense?  Just want to avoid a lot of typing, and typos.

Thank you
Cheers, Liam

Set up a basic opnsense, then in configuration->backups select the pfsense config.xml file but only restore the section you need, i.e. dhcp then let it reboot and check what's been added, repeat for the unbound etc, but check after each one.

Not saying it will be flawless as I've never done it, but some of the config is the same.

Thank you very much!  I have a spare box I can test on so this is very helpful.

..would do a backup on the opnsense after each and every step, before importing the next section of the config. Just in case something breaks you doon't have to start from scratch again.... ;-)

hi,
one question, when you say to restore only the section needed, is there a correct order or sequence to follow?
I understood e.g. that the system section is not anymore compatible and i've to avoid any import of that.

On the basic configuration of opnsense after the usage of the wizard (to have the system section correctly filled), what have I to do exactly?

thank you
Mik

Only import the sections you need and test after each one. There is no easy way I'm afraid. I just tried importing a pfsense config from November last year, I switched in December - I was unable to log in and had to go into single user mode and restore my config.

Rule is save the config, restore an area, reboot and see if it works, if so carry on, if not restore the last saved config and move onto the next section. Tedious but it's the only way to restore from a pfsense config.

The best way is just to do it from scratch taking advantage of the features that OPNsense offers.

<<-- Do this, although long winded it will cause you less pain and you'll have a better firewall at the end of it. :)
