Hello everyone,
A development package is available now for the upcoming release series and updated alongside each stable release. You can read about its most prominent changes here:
https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=8597.0
The process to switch the release type is nowadays found in the firmware GUI settings, simply select "Development", hit "Save", and do an update as usual to switch the packages. The new version is immediately active, but service subsystems may need a restart or better yet a full reboot.
Switching back to "Production" is just as easy.
If you have any questions please let me know. :)
Cheers,
Franco

Are there .img or ISO files available for download? The reason I ask is that I have updated my router hardware to use a newer Intel Apollo Lake CPU. Unfortunately this does not boot 18.1.x anymore, even if I try a fresh install. I won't be able to install 18.1x and then upgrade to 18.7. I would like to try just to fresh load an ISO or IMG file and see if I get a better result. Is this possible with 18.7 dev builds?

There's an iso's available at https://mirror.dns-root.de/opnsense/releases/18.1/ (https://mirror.dns-root.de/opnsense/releases/18.1/), You can then upgrade through 18.1.7 and 8.
or
Once installed then switch to the dev path and follow the instructions to switch to 18.7.b*

Apollo Lake issues are discussed in the forum, it needs custom loader tunables at the moment, but may change with FreeBSD 11.2, which we have not yet active so in short no image will help you here.

Hi
Once the final release of 19.1 is out, will it be a simple upgrade via UI or will we need to reflash using img?
-
It'll be available as both a GUI and console update.

Any way to already upgrade to 19.1 RC via the console?
I have a spare system on 18.7 with ZFS which I could test with.
-
Not quite yet. We're preparing the last bits for 19.1-RC now...
-
Is the current snapshot from November the latest build we can flash until RC is released?
-
Yes
