Title: Atom C3000 - do intel nics work?
Post by: opnsenseuser on May 07, 2018, 09:11:25 pm
I would like to buy the Supermicro A2SDi-4C-HLN4F board.

But unfortunately I do not know if the atom c3000 series
is already supported or not.

I read that freebsd 11 supports the drivers.

What about opnsense?

Are there any plans?

Thank you

The current OPNsense release (18.1.x) runs on top of FreeBSD 11.1.
With some added patches from  HardenedBSD for security.

Thank you for your answer, but does that also mean that it is also supported by opnsense?
Could someone already test a board ?

OPNsense can use whatever the OS supports.

this is what i found in the pfsense forum:
https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=139429.30 (https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=139429.30)

So it should only work with version 11.2, if I understand correctly?

indeed correct, best wait for 11.2

netgate just modded the 11.1 code for their XG-7100 and kept it for them selfs

We backported the C3000 support for hardware we're selling, and it's the only hardware that we have properly vetted the code with. FreeBSD is adding C3000 support to 11.2, so it will be more widely tested there on other hardware by FreeBSD users.

We have not seen any stability issues on the particular hardware in the XG-7100, which is where we've tested it.

So freebsd 11.2 will be released on 27 June 2018.

How long will it take until this version of freebsd is taken over to opnsense?

Expect development snapshots with FreeBSD 11.2 in autumn 2018 (mid OPNsense 18.7), release in OPNsense 19.1 if all goes well. We can't move any faster and need to be careful with regressions as we have had less than perfect results with earlier updates 10.1 -> 10.2 and 10.2 -> 10.3 in the past.

Franco

I did a test and installed freebsd 11.2 rc2 on my supermicro board with atom c3558. and it looks like the nic's are detected. Although I have only the 1 gbit nic's but I think that should be compatible. I took a screenshot of it.

We will have a CFT out soon for driver updates for em/igb/ixgbe/ixl for 18.7. We'll stay on FreeBSD 11.1 but use the newer FreeBSD 11.2 drivers when possible.

Could you give us an update on your experiences?

Have you got OpnSense working on your Supermicro A2SDi-4C-HLN4F based system? Any problems?
