Title: Need PPPoE help - timeout after 9 seconds
Post by: zm10 on March 03, 2018, 03:38:23 pm
First time using OPNSense. I used pfSense before and have two other gateways in my home working perfectly, one Asus router and the other is a virtualized Sophos UTM.

Using OPNSense 17.7.5. I See v18 is out now, but I started some months ago and struggled with this so I shelved the project for a bit. Trying to get it going again.

PPPoE won't establish connection. I've triple checked my username & password.

I get a timeout message:

ppp:[wan_link0] PPPoE connection timeout after 9 seconds

So it seems to give up after 9 seconds.

My old Asus router gives more information when establishing a connection. It asks for PAP authentication and waits 30 seconds before giving up. This goes on a few times after which it succeeds in about 15 seconds. So my Asus seems to wait longer for PAP authentication. OPNSense gives up after 9 seconds.

How do I make OPNSense wait longer than 9 seconds for authentication? I can't see a setting for this.

Not too impressed at the moment. Don't be telling me to call my DSL provider for faster authentication. The other two gateways manage it just fine.

Many PPPoE improvements will come in the upcoming service releases, the developers are actively working on them. They might help with your issues as well. This is all I know, maybe @Franco can shed some more light on the topic. You might need to switch to v18 to get them.

I tried v18.1 of OPNSense. Same problems with PPPoE - just doesn't work. PPPoE has been around for over 20 years, no need to re-invent it.

I put pfSense on and got it working in less than 10 minutes.

Bye Bye OPNSense. You'll never see me again. Who has time for stuff that doesn't work. I fiddled with it way too much.

You should call your ISP and ask for a faster authentication. You know, it's just 2018. We don't have time to fiddle with ice age quality services. We don't have a code for it anymore, duh! That's just something I wanted to say.

Btw, you do enjoy free software, right? Better have the decency to respect other people's time and free effort. Everybody here is working hard to provide the best possible experience. You should sometimes pay for some (software, time and work), then bark at those who give these to you for free.

I think zm10 forgot to thank you for trying to help, so let me do it:

Thank you for your time! It's much appreciated. :)

Such efforts are never wasted.

Cheers,
Franco

My pleasure Franco.

You know, I was talking with a colleague the other days about you, told him I admire your work. From our chats and from what I can see you do I could tell it can't be easy for you, and everything you do, you do it with passion and a very high level of professionalism. Just to put people in context here, you already know that I'm also mainly in the security software business (some other type) for quite a while now, and I also have to deal with the things you deal with, on a different level. And it's still hard. I really don't know how you manage all these, so you must have a nuclear core or something to mitigate this amount of knowledge, code, and support, with the frequency you do it and the way you do it. And with OPNsense, you do it for free (from an end-user POV). Your teammates as well, but I don't know them as much.

I can't thank you guys enough for this. It's 1000x more valuable to get speedy quality support than anything else, as there's no such thing as perfect software and things can go south from time to time. So, thank you!

I'm an unpaid volunteer who stumbled into this. It's a lot of fun so that's enough to carry on. And now there's just work, work, work. Let's get to it...  :D
