Title: Updating from 17.7.17 to 18.1 from Webinterface > complete failure
Post by: hirschferkel on January 30, 2018, 03:38:57 pm
Using the Webinterface to upgrade from 17.7 to 18.1 caused a dead Router which started and after half an hour of wainting was set back to 17.7.
This was not the expected result...
All Updates from 17.1 ran smoothly and created no single abort or failure.

How can I Update to 18.1? (I use a Varia AMD APU2C4 Router.)

Do you have the console output for inspection?

The Router was gone, I could not get the GUI anymore. So at the moment i installed 17.12 again, which I had on a second Flash card. So there are no console logs available...

You could also try the live mode early import and see how that goes on a 18.1 DVD, VGA or Serial image.

If it works, install in place and retain your settings, if not reboot and let the old system come back up.

Reporting back in any case with the issues seen will help.

Thanks,

What's a live mode early import and how do I do that?

Use the appropriate install image to boot your hardware. The process is documented below:

https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/install.html?highlight=boot#opnsense-importer

When the system prints "...." you can press any key, then type the name of the disk where your real OPNsense install resides, typically ada0. A list of available hard disks is provided by the utility.

Ah you mean to create a nano-image on a different Flashcard, right?

No, you said you installed 17.7 again, presumably with a USB stick and an installer image?

No I made a copy of the old installation on another Flashcard long ago, so if I will ever run into failure (like i did with 18.1, now) I would be able to switch Flash cards to proceed with a working router. So it's like I never had done anyhting.

So I thought to create a new boot card with a nano-image on the broken installation is the fastest way, no?

Best

Yes, you can export your current config and import on the new card with 18.1. That works too.

How big are these cards? Or rather how much free space?

In general, the major updates are taxing for SD and CF cards and their life time.

I use 8GB Flash cards which will only store the OPNSense software on it.
I tried to download the 18.1 nano-image, but got this wired message on OPNSense.org when I will generate the download file:

Checksum verification
Checksum files next to the images may not prove authenticity of images on any particular mirror. The checksums can also be found in the forum annoucements, mailing lists, blog posts or GitHub. Please double-check. OPNsense-17.7.5-OpenSSL-nano-amd64.img.bz2 (SHA256) : 2924ceec3f11206e866c6146112ae14d304cd5e18acb3803a923e04019651c1b

Where do I get 18.1 as a nano.image? The most recent built there seems 17.7.5?

O.k. found it in your post...

I had a similar issue with Upgrade from 16 >> 17... Thought this would have stopped but continues with Upgrade to 18. At least it worked with nano-image
