Title: [WORKAROUND] Just ran update and no longer boots (ESXI)
Post by: bbrendon on June 14, 2015, 09:16:27 pm
Seems to be always a twist. I just ran the command line updater on this cluster and now both VMs are down.

Any ideas? Is this easily fixed? Screen shot attached.

Hi bbrendon,

which update was this (from, to)?  Can you try booting the old kernel via the boot loader menu selection (kernel.old)?

If that doesn't help, you can run the installer (preferably 15.1.11.1) and use the "config import" to restore your configs and then do "quick/easy install" to completely rewrite the system with all your configurations.

If you can, make snapshots or try to export the config. You can also use "config import" from the 15.1.11.1 install media, then choose "exit" to continue to boot the live cd.

If 15.1.11.1 has the same error, there is something wrong with the new kernel, but I'm guessing the installation was simply a few versions back?

Lots of questions... :)

Cheers,
Franco

That looks like the issue I had too when I ran ESXi.
A reset of the VM always helped. Never had the issue with Hyper-V though.

That last line won't help you, but it's what I noticed from running the two.

Wow. Powering off the VM and then on fixed it. bizarre.

I'm not sure what version I _was_ running, but its on 15.1.1.11.4 now.

It looks like a vendor VMware specific issue that hasn't been addressed yet. Glad to hear the problem disappeared. :)

Franco, it will return ;-) That's the bigger issue.

I know, it points to FreeBSD vs. VMware trickery:

https://communities.vmware.com/thread/482834
https://communities.vmware.com/thread/498680
https://communities.vmware.com/tags#/?tags=freebsd

They all point to the storage/disk layer having occasional hiccups that haven't been properly addressed. All proposed workarounds seem to be educated guesses that may or may not work (indicating that they don't most likely).

I've run Fusion without any issue so far. I even switched from VirtualBox to Fusion for FreeBSD because it was more stable at the time. Guess that is past now and won't help everybody. Just sharing a few thoughts. I don't know how to proceed. :/

Just upgraded a cluster on ESXi 4.1U3 and with no issues.

It was stuck during the update on 9/11 Sudo (something) and then a reboot. No problems at all and says its fully updated.

Hi Brian,

yeah, that was a glitch with the Ajax poll from the firmware page, since fixed and part of tomorrows 15.1.12:

We need a THANK YOU button Franco :D

Which we can use more than once in each topic ;)

Encouragement is the road to sloppiness I dare say. We have a working system: complained loudly equals fixed promptly.
