Title: [SOLVED] OPNSense And Timemachine Backups
Post by: mayo on December 27, 2017, 02:43:43 pm
I everybody,
made a new OPNSense installation on an apu2c4 board. No VLANS, DHCP on Lan No Rules. Just a fresh install from scratch.
The problem is that my mac, could not find on network TimeCapsule. I can see the capsule on dhcp leases but backups can not start with the warning "no timecapsule found on network". With the sophos xg 17 that i have tried before everityng went fine (but I prefer opnsense!)

thank you so much!

Are the Mac and the Timemachine on the same switch?

You may need to bridge the two lan interfaces if they're not. Also check the requirements https://developer.apple.com/library/content/documentation/NetworkingInternetWeb/Conceptual/TimeMachineNetworkInterfaceSpecification/TimeMachineRequirements/TimeMachineRequirements.html

Thank you Bart,
Yes same passive switch connected to a single port on apu board lan port... it seems that manually adding TimeCapsule on dhcp reservation works. Very strange!

manually adding it to DHCP may also make it available via DNS which might be the reason.
If you have multiple Networks you may be interested into the mdns-repeater plugin ans the linked site says that it is using mdns.

Thank you Fabian, probably is DNS related like you said. My configuration is only a lan ad no different subnets. I was thinking about mdns but I think is not necessary!

Timemachine over network needs a working mDNS. Check if your Macs see the Timemachine offers with eg. Bonjour Browser:

Thanks Zeitkind, I add a static dhcp entry for timecapsule and now it seems to work. But I really need mDNS also if I have just one subnet and no vlans?

Yes but not the proxy. mDNS is multicast so it will not get from one subnet to another without a repeater / proxy.

Some news: no backups since 3 days. If I reboot the Timemachine than the backup starts. I checked the arp table of opnsense and (for the timemachine) i can see yhe mac address and the ip adress but the hostname is not resolved.
Something due to DNS in lan? Or IPv6 related?

(I still have no rules or routing on opnsense, just install as is)

In the meanwhile I'm waiting for 18.1 and try a fresh install...

Does the DHCP request contain the required information and are the hostnames of DHCP hosts registered in DNS?

Probably not IPv6 related but it may has to do with broadcasts or multicasts which do not happen as often as it may be required.

Will probably not be a huge difference. As far as I know there are currently no changes pending, which are DNS related. The only difference may be WPAD support which may come if I have time to write it.

I'll check as soon as I'll at home. One question: how to register DHCP hosts in DNS? I want to be sure to have DNS configured in a good way... Thank you so much!

Some News: I’ve enabled DHCP stuff in Unbound DNS and now it seems to work... Thanks Everyone!
