Title: 17.7 and Server 2008 Hyper-v
Post by: cbyrd on October 26, 2017, 05:44:16 am
I have searched the forums and have tried the set hw.ata.disk_enable="1" with both the amd64 and 32bit versions with no luck .. I never can find the hard drive.

I am using the DVD Image

I have tried using both ISO and SCSI in the Hyper-V settings.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

To start with, which Hyper-V version are you running?

I am running Hyper-v 2016 Free at home, and using the normal ISO installation I've never had to set the hw.ata.disk_enable line.
Do keep in mind that, because of the current kernel version (11.0), only IDE boot disks are supported.
If you set it to SCSI, that might explain your issue.

Currently running a test VM which uses the 11.1 kernel, so Gen2 is supported as well.
Meaning SCSI boot works too.

I am running Server 2008 R2.   When I do the install it never can find hard drive.

I have tried the both the DVD and vga iso.   I would upgrade to 2012 or 2016 but I have an enterprise license and I am running 4 virtual servers on the system and I do not want to spin up another server just for this.

Thanks
Chris

No Software Assurance, I guess?

Either way, running it in a 2008 R2 VM should work.
I haven't touched Hyper-V 2008 R2 since late 2013, so I would need to see for my self.
Is this a home or work environment?

No software assurance.   I bought the servers on a gov surplus and they came loaded with server 2008 r2 std.

I have not been able to get it to run on hyper-v 2008.

This is a small business environment.
Thanks

Hi Chris,

There is a free version of Hyper-V 2016. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/hyper-v-server-2016

Ignore the evaluation moniker; Microsoft offers Hyper-V free of charge and there is no evaluation period.

Alternatively, you can install ESXi stand-alone and convert the Hyper-V guests. https://www.vladan.fr/free-tools-to-convert-vhd-into-vmdk-and-vice-versa/

Bart, then he would have to buy four Standard licences for his VM's.

To cbyrd, you might want to upgrade anyway.
2008 R2 is feature locked, so only security updates are released.

Also, again, I don't mind having a look using Teamviewer.
Just let me know.

Also, no need to mention every single post that you can't get it to work ;-)

Hi Weust,

If the Windows Server 2008 R2 is the Enterprise edition, then yes - the server licence will cover four VM guests. However, only the Standard edition is available as an OEM licence. Any non-OEM licence for the hardware does not cover the new owner, just the government Chris purchased the server from.

Chris has not told us if (m)any guests are running Windows ;-)

Even if all four current guests are Windows servers, host+guest plus three extra guests with Standard edition is about 60% of the 2016 Datacenter edition costs. All subject to the core multiplier, of course.

Hurray for FOSS!

True. Forget about 2008 R2 and Enterprise.

And I know your name is Bart...

This is a new server so currently it would be running only one guest for OPN and one Guest for email platform(windows 2008).

I have a copy of Server 2012 running on another Server.  I may try to see if it would run on that.

I was trying to keep all my vm's on hyper-v to be able to move them easier.

I will load another 2012 server up and see if it will run OPN.    I know PF will run on it but I have not gotten opn on 2012 to run.  I will have to play more with it.

Thanks for your help and input !
