Title: Slight nudge on brochure: please, please, abandon "utilise"
Post by: batteriesinc on August 16, 2017, 09:32:05 am
I'm returning to m0n0wall and its successor after years of corporate kit that doesn't quite do what I want (the joy of starting your own company is that you get to make the choices ;D ).

Looks good so far, and I also enjoy the "brochure" - except for one thing: stop using the word "utilise", please.
To people who read and write English for a living it actually grates to read it.

"Utilise" is a word you use when you want to impress someone with complexity but don't possess the correct vocabulary to do so - it merely makes it look you're trying too hard (it's also often found in Powerpoint presentations, which ought to be a hint in itself :) ).  Just use "use" instead.

I have only shot through the doc at high speed, I may come back to it later but in general it's well designed (well, OK, apart from the "pipes" drawing at the bottom of page 5, that was clearly not designed by the same person as the rest and looks in need of improvement).

I like the brochure because I can use it to encourage clients to use it on premise, and my next step is to start researching the commercial version and any customisation we may need.  It may appear strange that I comment on mere documents, but they are essential to ensure there is commerce, which in turn supports the project.

I may thus be back - got a lot to catch up on..

Hi there,

Thanks, I've passed this along to the makers of the brochure, it is certainly resonable feedback. :)

Cheers,
