Title: failure to connect to web via my adsl modem
Post by: brackleygraham on June 26, 2017, 05:14:04 pm
I hd have installed opnsense 17.1.4 on a stan-alone computer which i intend to use as a firewall for my home network. How do I attach it to my Plusnet modem and hence the web. I have two NICS,one for lan and one for web. I have tried many things but so far no joy. when I point my browser ( Firefox on linux mint 18.2)  to a web site it times out. The ip address of the opnsense box is 192.168.10.2. I have set the proxy in firefox to match.
I hope you can help.

Do not set the proxy, set the gateway of your workstation to be the opnsense box.

what did you configure for the WAN interface's ip address ? It should be something that corresponds to the modem.

OPNsense works much better if it holds the (public) WAN address. If you can, set the plusnet router to be in bridge mode and do PPPoE on OPNsense with the credentials from your ISP. If you can't, consider a dedicated DSL modem. I've used a TP-link TD-8616 for ADSL and a DrayTek Vigor 130 for VDSL, both with very good results.

As a troubleshooting tip, ignore web browsing until can do more basic tasks like ping 8.8.8.8 and ping google.com.

Hi,
Me again. I have tried all hints but no luck. However I have noticed something odd.  My browser can get to 192.168.10.2 and display the Dashboard of OPNsense but I cannot ping the same address from the terminal App. All this must be going through IPCOP, which is on. No hints in the logs!
