Title: Hi everyone!
Post by: SilverJS on May 26, 2015, 09:17:05 pm
Hi all!

Just wanted to say, first and foremost, that I'm avidly following the progress of this fork.  I'm a new pfSense user (new to the whole UTM thing, really) but I quite like the philosophy behind OPNSense.  The interface is also very refreshing!  So, kudos to the team, keep up the good work!  I'm far too ignorant to be of any help development-wise; all I can do is cheer from the sidelines, but rest assured that I'm indeed doing that!

With that, I have two questions :

1.  Interface.  I do really love it, but would you not think that, given the very wide adoption of 16:9 monitors by most, that a horizontal layout would most take advantage of the real estate available?  Especially if clicking on a menu item on the left expands it downwards - I would posit that this is one area pfSense does a bit better, with menu items laid out horizontally at the top, with hovered-over items expanding downwards.  I'm assuming, though, that the interface is also quite easily customizable?  If so, I suppose a horizontal layout might not be very difficult to achieve.  Heck, I might even try my hand at doing that eventually!

2.  ZFS support.  I know someone else had already mentioned this in a separate thread, and Franco (as I recall) had mentioned he'd consider it.  I'd just like to add my voice to the chorus requesting this.  I can tell you that, in the short while I've used boot environments in FreeNAS 9.3 (been using FreeNAS since the very early 8.x versions), that they have already proven their worth and utility to me.  Anybody who's had trouble with an upgrade of any kind can relate to this, I'm sure.  I understand this is much more long-term, and that the team has higher-priority items for now - but, all I'm asking is, that you not let this drop from your crosscheck. =)

Keep cracking on, and good luck!

Hi there,

Just wanted to say, first and foremost, that I'm avidly following the progress of this fork.  I'm a new pfSense user (new to the whole UTM thing, really) but I quite like the philosophy behind OPNSense.  The interface is also very refreshing!  So, kudos to the team, keep up the good work!  I'm far too ignorant to be of any help development-wise; all I can do is cheer from the sidelines, but rest assured that I'm indeed doing that!

thanks. :) No worries, we know that testing is the most important part. We appreciate all comments and bug reports that you may want to share with us.

We can do interchangeable menus in the future, we also have a new quick navigation feature coming up real soon that might make you happy without bringing back the old-style menu.

The other thing we're going to do is adding adaptive column count for wider screens, but that's something exclusively for the new pages based on the MVC framework we've introduced.

This is still a huge task ahead of us. I've recently fixed package installations on ZFS systems, but for now two major issues are stopping us from deploying ZFS in a release:

(a) the rc system won't boot off a zfs system as it is not aware of its idiosyncrasies
(b) the installer needs a zfs install option

After those steps are tackled, we can start to phase in boot environments and the like. If anybody is willing to help I'd be happy to guide and review changes to make this happen rather sooner than later. Hope that helps. :)

Cheers,
Franco

Re:  quick navigation feature

Is this feature planned to hit OPNsense images prior to 15.7 or 15.7 or after?
Is this feature changing the present menu structure, like in 15.1.11.x?

Hopefully for 15.7, on the off chance it's not it'll be in an early stable update.

There is no change in menu layout and structure.
